this city, known aa the Cox ranch dis
trict Preciado and his jaded officers
reached San Bernardino at dark yester
day from The Pipes, a desert station.
Their search for the murderer resulted
in nothing but the discovery of an
other clue, which the deputy sheriff
hopes will result in the capture of the
fugitive. At Pipes, Preciado was
reached by a messenrer from Cox ranch,
who slated that the Indian had been
seen in the foothllla in that vicinity.

chasing new equipment for the fire de
partment the council would do well -to

City Engineer 3. W. Morris says in
his report to the mayor that his esti
mates for 1910 are based on the ex
penses of his department for the first
eight months of 1909 and that he has
not included in these salaries for addi
tional employes that he will have to se
cure when the vast amount of public
improvement work is unaer run sway.
He will ask for more help, he says, . as
it Is needed.
Owing to the fact that the city has
eliminated the maintenance contract a
chemical laboratory and a chemist will
have to be allowed at a total cost of
$3000.
