I did not ' conoem myself much. about It,, but very soon from all parts of the country It was borne to me in my remote place of real, dence, evidence that I had made . great hit and that, wnatever mignt do in fate of the Confederacy, the song would survive it All Mr. Randall ever' received from the publication of "My Maryland", was $100 in Confederate money from a pub lisher om mualo In New Orleans, The money came to him at a time when Confederate money was worth very lit tle, and so the poem never really yielded him anything. The music of the song was composed by a Baltimore lady. Miss Hetty Cary. The house of her father was the headquarters for the southern sympathizers of Baltimore. Correspond ence, money, clothing and supplies or all kinds went from there through the lines to the young men of the city who had iolned the Confederate army. The Glee club was to hold a meeting one evening early in June of 1861. Mis Cary had charge of the program on that occasion. witn a scnooi gins eagerness to score a success, sne searched through her stocks of songs and airs; nothing teemed to suit her. Aroused by her tone of despair, it was suggested that she should adopt the words. Maryland.-- -My Maryland. The poem was produced and declaimed. ' Lauriger Horatiuai" sne exclaimed, ana In a flash the song found voice in the stirring air so perfectly adapted to it That night when. her contralto voice rang out the stanzas the refrain rolled forth from every throat present.
