Holllday early laat week and for 10 day 11 the clear, earlil notes 01 the artillery buries rouaau the cottager along- the Doara wain ana aown ine necanicum Before most of the summer population bad left their bods the battery was out on tne boach and moving into action. The early pedestrian on tae board walk ouna nil - luorougmarv lunruau iiu patrolled by soldiers and the late sleeper, was awakened by the roar of cannon. Orderlla rode up and down the beach on horseback. . White flags and red flags appeared above the signal corps flags on the Moors pier, and great rings of white smoks marked the place where the shells exploded 011 Tillamook head. The . guns were stationed on the beach some two miles from , the target. It was a task of no little difficulty to get fuses in the shells just the proper length so as to explode them in the proper place. This was the training which the state artillery officers needed, and which ..they received under the direction of Captain Leroy Lyons of the fourth United States artiilety. Practice on the beach in the morn ings was witnessed by a large crewd of summer visitors. Perhaps of as much Intel est to the spectators as he ar tillery practice wa the drill of the hos pital corps. After the- firing, auie bodied - sruardsmenr. were found motion less on the ground behind the guns. A substitute was rushed into' the. disabled . one's place, a quick diagnosis made : and on a oard fastened around - the patlnnt's neck was written the nature of the Injuries. Down from the sand . Mil where ths familiar red cross marked the hospital headquarters came men . with stretchers, and the motionless forms were taken there. On arriving at headquarters it was found from the card that alt manner of injuries had befallen those- from the. f root. .JFrao- j tured limbs and v gunshot wounds abounded anions- ths list on the cards. Considerable consultation followed and while it was not found necessary to amputate any nmDs great roils or band' age were bound around them. Throughout the week there has been steady Increase In the population of me reeori wnicn is greater loaay tnan at any timo during the season.
