Panic-stricken when a small fire broke out in the tene ment' where she lived, Mra Esther Schwelner clasped her 4-year-old child to her breast and Jumped from the fourth story window early today. She struck the pavement head first and sho and her child were both killed. The fire was soon controlled. VICIOUS DOG BITES BOY WHO MAY DIE (Special Dispatch to The Joernal.) Stevenson, Wash., Aug. 13. With bis face, arm and hand terribly lacer ated from the bite of a vicious dog, Orln Grossman, an 11-year-old Portland boy, is lying near death's door at the Hot Springs hotel at Collins, Wash. The dog was tied to a tree in the yard, but no one saw the brute bite the boy. The flesh was torn literally from his cheek and other parts of his body are terribly mangled. . . . It is the purpose of the gentleman shortly to start the culture of the frog on quite an extensive plan.
