' - - The people who read Mr. Robinson's annual report In yesterday a - Journal gained therefrom the Information that notwithstanding ao Increase of 181 In number of children of school ag-e, the construction of seven brand new school houses, the employment of 8 new teachers, that the average number of pupils belonging during tne last school year was S2,308T Just 1,062 less than the fljrures Showed for the preceding year. Of course, every man woman and child ; who hu at heart, the Interest of Portland and the great northwest was shocked. Then when they read Mr. Robinson's statement that the average dally -attendance for the last year was 21,6C7,'a04 less than "the : figures showed for the precedlngVjrearJLjonie immediately" threw a fit When asked about - the figures Mr. Robinson explained the trouble. "It Is this way," he said, 'The aver age number -of pupils belonging is se cured by adding the whole number of days' attendance during the year and the whole number of days' absence and dividing what you -get by something you already have, to wit. the averagu number of days taught during the year. Todd, a freight clerk for the Southern Piclfic, was shot and probably fatally wounded this morninsr bv Lloyd Bru- baker. conductor of a North Beach car. From there It Is but two blocks to the freight warehouse where he Is employed, and he forgot to get a transfer, ; Brubaker demanded money and .Todd told the carman that he had none and was" to get off two blocks farther." Brubaker Insisted and a moment later the men began to fight Finally Todd waa foroed from the car. Then Bru baker shot the clerk through the neck, the bullet ranging downward and lodg ing tn his shoulder. ' Brubaker claims he committed' the deed .. In self-defense. He says Todd first . pointed a small gun at him, but for some reason the trigger , would not work. This gave the carman time to draw his revolver, which he fired only after telling Todd to put his pistol down, according to his story to the po lice. Stat Special Officer Begga, who dis covered Todd after Brubaker had con. tlnued his interrupted trip, found no gun on Todd and close examination In the vicinity has failed to reveal the weapon alleged to have ben In Todd's hands at the time of the shooting. .
