this season, and on her trip from Noma
to San Francisco she made the run in
IS days, from the time she left, there,
: or 12 actual running, as she was caught
In the ice for 24 hours in Bering sea.--
Captain Schage said that there was a
great deal of ice in those waters this
year, and the Falcon cot into floes,
, both On her trip up to Nome and on the
' way back. There was a strong current,
he said and the ice floated around so
that It soon surrounded the vessel and
she could not' move out of It for 24
' hours. In spite of this, however, she
was not damaged any, and made a very
.quick .passage to San Francisco. j.
She will remain on this run" as "long
. as the Riverside continues" to make
trips . between San Francisco and 8a

be for elsht or nine trips and possibly

STEAM SCHOONERS RACE
: Northland Beats Steamers May f air

' Another race was Indulged in by the
steamer Northland, which arrived at the
Couch street dock last night, on her way
up from San Francisco, In which she
beat two steam schooners, bound for this
. port. .
The Mayfalr end the Cascade were the
vessels she left behind on the way un,
both having; left San . Francisco a few
; hours behind her. Another ' steam
schooner, the Francis H. Leggett, bound
for Puget sound, was also one of the
contestants, t but was left " behind off
Point Arena with the others. The North-
land left San Francisco Saturday night
at 9 o'clock, somewhat behind the other
steamers, , but ' beat , the Mayfalr In by
almost a day.
Her cargo consists of 1000 barrels of
asphalt and '60 tons of general merchan
dise. She will load 860,000 feet of lum
ber at the Portland mills for-her re
turn trip to San Fraiwlsco.-
The steam schooner Thomas L. Wand
also arrived last night and Is unload
: In a: her cargo at the Oak street dock.
Captain Peterson said that they had an
ordinary trln. the weather being plcas
- ant all of the way up to the mouth of
the Columbia. She had aboard 400 tons
of cement and S25 tons of general mer
chandise, principally sugar and salt. She
will leave here tonight for Everett,
where she will load lumber and cedar
poles, the latter for the Western Eleo-
n company, ior Her cargo back to
Ban Tancisco.

acted there on the stage of the National
theatre In full view of a large audience.
In the third act of the play which was
beina; given the heroine la shot bv a re
jected suitor, and dies -in the arms of

soon afterwards. On the night of the
traaredv. to the. astonishment of the au
dience. H. Tashnakoff, who was .acting
the villain, made no attempt to shoot
the girl but' Put bullet through the
heart of her lover, who was waiting for
his cue to ant ear. then shot the sirl. and
finally turned the revolver against him
self and fired. " Several women in-the
audience fainted, and a great many oth
er persons sustained injuries in the
panic that ensued while endeavoring to
force their way out of the theatre. The
motive of the crime aboears to have
been Jealousy, the actors having really
represented the parts they played.
