James Manahan, famed the country over

wise, is a devoted friend of Senator La
Follette, conferred with him when here
a few days ago, and. is constantly la

Mr. Manahan entertained Mr. Bryan
also a few days ago in St. Paul. He
was host of former Governor Joseph
Folk of Missouri about that time.
In a letter the other day Mr.- Bryan

senatorial ambitions but the progres
alves in both parties were glad, and the
- conservatives in both 'parties were sad.

states, and by the same alga, there is a
moving: together of the conservative Re
publicans and Democrats. These things
had been nicely worked out by political
suessers. when along came the letter of
Roger Q. Mills of Texas, celebrated
author of the Mills tariff bill, who said
with almost brutal plainness: "I. and
for that matter the people, have lost
confidence in the Democratic party."

time. Mills' thunderous pronouncement
caused it to rise to a level close to
face value; in other words, Mr. Mills
created a profound sensation, and his
words added force to the hitherto con
fident predictions that party lines as
now drawn would disappear and in 1912
new parties would go to the country on

as conservative. j

west as fertile ground for the sowing
of the progressives, of some southern

John W. Hanahaw this week disposed
ef 10 acres of hill land, lying north of
town, to Henry C. Taylor, a farmer
from North Dajkota, for $15 an aero.
The 10 acres aold Is part of a 40 acre
tract that Mr. Hanshaw bought eight
years ago. He paid Si an acre for the
land, and at the time he made the pur
chase those familiar with the land said
he paid too much Tor it. and that ho
would soon starve out.
Mr. Hanshaw waa a man of limited
means, however, getting on in yeara,
with a large family to support, and
could not buy a better place, and start
ed to clear iip the land. The first few
years but little progress was made, but
after that he began to realise an in
come from the land. The land durina;
all the time It has been cultivated haa
never been fertilized In the least, yet
has retained Its fertility. After de
ducting all expenses of caring and har
veatlnd the berry crop that was raised
the past year, and wagea for Mr. Han
shaw at $2.60 per day for days ho
worked, the 10 acre tract netted him a
clear profit of $100 an acre. The land
Is set eut to strawberries and logan
berries, some evergreen blackberries
have been set out, but are not in full
bearing yet.
