Death of T. O. Frotsman Fran61s
Chllcote Protiman who died June 2 at
the home of his son in Waverly, Wash.,
was for 80 years. 1862 to 184, one of
the prominent business men or t-on-land.
He will be remembered latterly
as the senior member of the late firm
of Protzman & Da France. After Mr.
Protzman's retirement from business he
made his home with, bis brother, Eugene,
of this city. For some time past his
health had been failing and he was vis
iting his son with the nope mat a
change of climate might prove a bene
fit. He was born near Hacerstown,
Md., October 29. 1827, coming to Call-
rornia in 1863 ana to roruana in 1004.

Cats Throat and Kepents Repenting
an attempt to end his life by slashing
his throat with a razor, Frederick K.
Foster late of Philadelphia, crawled' to
the telephone In his room at the Sar
gent hotel last night, and summoned
help. The night clerk heard his screams
and secured a physician. Foster was
taken to the Good Samlrtan hospital,
where today it waa said he would live,

tered at the hostelry June 1 as being
from Philadelphia. He will make no
statement.

Wonderful Hone Race at Orpheum.
The most wonderful horse race, to-
f ret her with the most elaborate mecban
cal apparatus for producing the same,
Is being shown this week at the Or
pheum. Three thoroughbred horses run
neck and neck at top speed down the
"stretch," when one forges ahead suf
ficiently to win by a nose.
CALIFORNIAKS WILL
STOP ALONG ROUTE
To cement the bonds oT friendship
which already connect California and
Oregon as well as other Pacific north
west states, the hundred Callfornlans
who will make the trip to the Seattle
fair under the auspices of the chamber
of Commerce of San Francisco, next
week, will make stops at all prominent
Oregon, points, at which Informal recep
tions are to be held.
The first stop after leaving Seattle
June 18 will be one of four hours at
Tacoma. Then will come Portland, with
an eight-hour stop, during which the
party will be shown the citv and ban
queted at the Commercial club. Down
the state stops will be made at Rose-
burg, Ashland, Medford and Grants Pass,
wnore little 10-mlnute lnlormai recep
tions will be held. Speakers In the party
will tell the people of Oregon of the
hopes of better friendship between the
two states held by the party, and much
good is expected to come from the trip.

ROSES IN NEW YORK
When New York school children are
freezing their ears and their cheeks and
traveling through siusn ana snow next
winter they will be able to come Into
their school houses and see pictures of
the Portland Rose Festival that will;
make them forget even the climate they
will be living in. I. R. Mount of New
York, a lecturer on western subjects,
who spends much of his time giving
stereopticon lectures to scnooi cnuaren,
Is In Portland and is preparing to taKe
several hundred views of the Festival
this week for exhibition In the metropo
lis next winter.
Many of Mr. Mount's lectures are
made in the evening and they are on a
multitude of subjects concerning the
west. The Rose Festival talk will be
the newest for tbts season, and It is ex
pected to prove a most popular one.

Everything Is ready for the big dance
at the Exposition rink hall tonight. The
floor is liKe glass and will accommo
date 1000 couples. Weinberger's full
orchestra will furnish music. Public

Horse races and. a sermon do not
seem rightly to belong to the same

ern sensational pulpits, but they follow
each other suitably enough at the Or
pheum this week. Perhaps that is be
cause the preacher Is one of the tactful
kind that does not touch upon the Im
mediate evil but talks around the sub
ject With his severe frock coat, his
righteous expression, his dry looking
manuscript, his sing song voice and his
unsmiling, uncompromising presentation
of pertinent (and Impertinent) fact
on "Modern Barbarism,' he Is certainly
entertaining. And to make It all the
funnier last night a girl In the audi
ence, became hysterical laughing and
actually, brought a smile from tha seri
ous faced preacher.
And the norse race immediately fol
lowing him well, it makes bo differ
ence how these stage race are fixed
and how well you know that the marked
horse will pull to tha lead just before
the curtain falls, for the moment you
lose yourself and cheer with the rest
as the horses work their treadmill It
is an interesting little playlet and a
beautiful course forms the scene and
the whole thing is eo realistic that ev
eryone gets excited and you don't feel
alone when the lights coma back and
you wake up. ,
Then there Is Frauleln Vera Berliner,
who plays the violin well enough to
please even the musicians, who usually
sneer at vaudeville "musical stars." She
Is-the slim modest looking kind of
girl that you like to applaud, too, and
you forgive her the laat gallery num
ber, which she really must play after
doing eome good work. And Clarice
Pasquellna has such a strong sense of
humor that she could easily do a talk
ing and singing stunt herself. As It
is, her support adds nothing to her
sucoess except to act as victims for
her wit
There are the ther fillers in. Matfk
and Williams in songs and dahces, in
troducing a gooa stair stunt; Clark and
Bergman in a jingle and whirl, and
Frank Ledenta, burlesque juggler, who
cleverly calls attention by bulletin to
the difficult things he doea The Or
