THE OREGON DAILY- JOURNAL', ' PORTLAND, . TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 8, 1909. 13 TOE wmmL TdMMY BEST BERRIES i AT SI ,50 TODAY Remarkable Slump in Val ues Shown in Front Street, TODAY'S WHOLESALE MARKETS. Strawberries show a slump.: Potato market holding. Hop contracts are firmer. Eggs are Just about steady. " , . Old hens not moving so fast. Spring; chicks wanted again.. Dressed meats are firm. - . ' Strawberries Show a Slump. Prices In the local strawberry mar ket show a remarkable ' sLumn today. Pest berries sold at $1.E0 a crate for 24s and some poor stock went as low as 1. However, considering the quality, him nigner pricea rruit . was cneapesi 'l he supplies- of strawberries show a very heavy Increase and all sections were reoresented In today's shlnmenta. Quality of most arrivals was unusually good and for that reason the buying h gooa in me race or me snarpiy ww er values. Present Indications ara that the local strawberry season will be a Very short ona and that prices will rule very tow for awhile, because most 01 ui iruit will ripen at once. Potato Karkrt Koldia. In the potato market a very' steady tone continued today for old stock. Bales are stlir being made at the high figures recently quoted, uemana ror our pota toes continues liberal In the south and Shippers have cleaned up most othelr holdings. In San Francisco today Ore gon HurDanks were auoted steady 3.4e)2.fiO. In the north the price of beet Yakimas went as high as 150 and from that figure sales were madetlown so tin a ton. Hop Contracts Are rirmer. For contracts on the coming crop the hop"-market is very firm these days. For several good yards as high as 14o a pound has been offered recently for the coming growth, but in each instance the offer has been refused. Orowers who have good prospects for the com ing yield are not disposed to contract and the higher the offerings for their com ing growth the firmer their views be come. So far as known to the general trade there Is no present business In pot stock. There has been another of those sud den flops of demand In the market for chickens. For awhile the trade cared for nothing but good fat hens, but now tho call Is Just the reverse and springs are being sought, while hens are not . moving nearly so fast. A prominent Front street house sends out the fol lowing weekly circular regarding chick ens: "Last week matters were rather quiet J a regards poultry, with demand rather Ight for all but large springers. We would not be surprised were conditions a little better this week, for we have the Rose Festival on and will have lots of visitors In the city, and a Vood many of them will want to eat chicken, for hens the market has been 14Qil4Vic; for springers (they must be lty pounds or better, average the demand is very good at 20 22c. Small springers Jare not wanted at all, and we and all others, have had a great deal of trouble In get ting rid of them. Buyers do not want the very small ones at all, at any price. Ve look for a good demand for large Aprlngers all this week. Spring ducks (they must be three pounds or better) are fair sellers at 20c. ' There are no Chinese In the city to speak of, and the duck market suffers. Old geese, dull at 9c, and a few large rat young ones should bring from 15 to 20c per pound. Live .turkeys, lS20o per pound. It is too warm to ship- dressed goods these days, unless they are Iced. Squab pigeons are weaker at 12. 26(8:1.60 per dosen." i ' Eggs Are Just About Steady. Receipts of eggs are quite liberal and demand In (rood. The market Is well able (o take care of all arrivals and there is no extra demand just at this time. Some supplies are still go inn to the north, but the movement Is not at all heavy. Pressed meats of all kinds are firm and select hogs and veals are especially sought at the prices printed. - Brief Votes of Wholesale Trade. Supplies of salmon are still short Some small shipments of, halibut ar rived on the sound yesterday and helped to relieve the famine. More liberal shipments expected. Apricots are In larger supply with the price down to $1.65 1.75. Butter Is steady, likewise cheese. No change in either market price today. Crated new onions are being offered at a reduction of 25c. Fruit trade in general, Is liberal. Fes tival visitors taking more supplies than the market Is accustomed to use. The gains ruled from io to la a bushel at the closing. Market for wheat opened with a very sharp - advance, with September the strongest feature, and this condition wss continued throughout the session with the exception of the decline after the start. . The report Issued today glvea 8.9 per cent more acreage to wheat than during 1808, and this was what brought about the early loss. The market for hogs was never better In Portland than today and some select tuff from Idaho was readily taken cars of by the trade at $$.16. Receipts in the yards continue of very light order and this forces packers in competition with each other more than ever before. - Cattle market is showing considerable easiness and ' the very top for select teers today would have been $4176, al though 'nothing that came sold at more than $4,80. These, however. Were only medium quality. Sheep market shows a more liberal run for the day, a total of 786 head appearing in the yards during the 24 hours. This compares with 874 yester day, 667 Saturday, 762 Friday, 843 Thursday, 608 Wednesday and 30 head week ago today. - Market for sheep Is rather sluggish and buyers are more discriminating In their purchases than they have been up to this time. Sound Is Still Taking Supplies. Most of the business in the yards during the past 24 hours was for out side account Carsten of Tacoma again sent out a special tralnload of cattle from the Portland yards to his Puget Bound packing plant and his local repre sentative. RUSH OF BERRIES IS 0HTJ00D RIVER Hood Rlvef,, June 8. With today's shipments. Hood River is now In the rush of the strawberry season and car load shipments are being sent out dally. Two thousand crates -were hipped out Saturday, 1200 yesterday and the shipment today will reacch 2000 crates. Berry pickers In large numbers are commencing to flock Into the valley but there Is work for ail of them and it is said that many more will have to bo obtained to meet the rapidly increas ing vield. The crop in the Oak Grove and Mt. Hood districts has nat been touched yet and mors berries are looked for from these districts than In any prev ious season. The bulk of the berries are being shipped to points east includtng Idaho, Montana. Utah and the Dakotas. Several representatives who are here endeav oring to get berries for Seattle have met with poor success as more money can be obtained for them by shipping east ' The fruit is wanted in Seattle for fair visitors. It is now believed that th,e crop will be fully up to the estimate of 60,000 crates and that prices will rule good throughout the season on "account of the short cherry crop. The berry season at White Salmon, across the river. Is said to be practically over, excerpt wher growers have water to Irrigate, as the warm weather has withered the unlrrlgated berries. The report that the diiec tors were about to retire the preferred shares was again in the limelight, and there was also talk of retiring 100,000 shares of the common. Union Paclfio shares received consid erable aid during the day from the sharp advance in, the Southern, and It moved up to 190 as compared with the previous closing at 189. Louisville & Nashville was exceeding ly bullish and moved up 1 points. Copper shares were rather depressed. and steel stocks, while active, found considerable selling -pressure, with the result that the close was within a frac tion of Saturday, even after the shares had received the full support of the pro fessionals.
