Woman's rights may be all right but she ha no right to think she can get along without numerous guardians over her personal property. This Is the conviction of Special. Of ficer George Seaton who from 10 o'clock In the morning until 8 o'olock at night watches over the welfare of the people who crowd Into the postoffles lobby. In proof of his belief he exhibits to the serious questioner a. collection consist ing of one set of false teeth, one $18 hat, one expensive fur boa (worn around the neck), one lady's ehoe, Innumerable purses, and an uncounted variety of other things. This is the collection of two years. Officer Seaton thinks that. If he remains two years longer he will need a large siaed building for storage. "Such questions they ask me." ex claimed the officer mournfully yester day evening while telling of the peculiar responsibility Involved In keeping peo ple from all nations set right as to stamps, Tflnncy orders, registered letters and a million other things. "Where is my husband," says one of them to me ti. i:h. r day. "How can I tell?" I an swf r "But lie wa- in here last week, a tall man with yellow hair and blue cvfs. Don't you keep the names and r-'ilrt everybody that comes,".: she complains. i And tlH'V don't seem to think It would be a good Idea to tie their shop ping bags to them, or train a little dog to carry them. Nearly every woman who stops to address a Dostal card lays her bag down, on the writing shelf. Thin she Starrs away with a pleased smile, thinking about the message she's sent, and coming back a few minutes later with the smile out of sight to ask who has taken her property. Some times 1 catch sight of them In time to run after tnetn and give mem bacK their belongings. But I'm kind of afratd to do that since I tried to restore Dooketbook to ihe wrong woman, and she accused me of wanting to flirt with her me an old married man that's for gotten all about such youthful foolish ness." Here they come. Hindus. Chinese, Japanese; the blue eyed sons of Norway and th6 black-eyed daughters of Italy. The observer who stands within ' the postofflce door and watches the never ceasing stream of- humanity first feels the wonder that there should be in one city so many kinds and appearances of people, then he begins to take an inter est In their multi-personality. Fifth and Sixth JUST OPFOSXTB OlDS, .WQBTMAJf fc KttQ'U - -r : ;- policeman on the corner, then, Inside, hesitates nnd looks doubtful. At this psychological moment, the special offi cer makes himself useful. "It Is a money order or a registered letter or some Information?" he axks considerate ly. "No, It Is only to know whether f should mil this letter for New York In the Pacific coast slot, and. If you please, how long will It be before dear sweetheart will get this letter If It goes very quick and Is delivered without slowness ?" It sounds strange In a story, but the officer answers all the questions. If the old woman, who has been looking for a letter from her boy for many days, weeps because th letter does not come, he Is sympathetic, and she goes away blessing his kindness and feeling sure that tomorrow her hopes will be realized. Perhaps the same old woman nas trouble, with her eanty strength to swing open the big door, so he does tnat Tor ner, and helps tier down the steps, too Then he turns around to run wildly after the abuent minded woman4 who left her bftby sitting on the writing sneir wnlle she went on down town. Then he gives his attention to the Important tssk of informing some slant-eyed celestial that he really should put some sort of an English ad dress on letters Intended for his friends, that Americans hare much trouble deciphering writing that looks like a large collection of the different varieties of skull and crossbones. And every evening there are the little tots that have lost their way and must get baok to mamma at once, and follow the more serious duty of restraining flir tations. Thus the multitude of human kind come and go, each bearing his or her load of pleasure or pain, each personal ity a little world of Individual thought, ambition and purpose nil asking ques tions, foolish and wise, and strangely enough the kindly officer answers them all and seems to enjoy doing It. OLD WATER SYSTEM STILL DOES GOOD SERVICE IN CITY Supplying rure water for the past 45 years to the people who live In what Is known as King's Heights and now In as good -condition as the day it was In stalled, Is the record of one of the old est water svstems of Portland, which Is located at the corner of lilst and lay- lnr Ktre.Atfl. The reservoir, which supplies the one main extending down 'Jlst street, is built of cement and contains about 10 feet of water as clear as crystal. When it was first built the water system was fed by a spring no bigger than a wash tub, but as the demand for the water grew the reservonr grew with it and is now about BO feet square. The location is admirable, the mouth of a small draw, and the pprlngs that now feed It flow from solid roLk. N A. Or Is it one of "life's trials,' or is It due to Just plain, hearty ppe tite? The doctors say not any one of these phrases the question correctly. They say fat IS because the fat per son's digestive organs are defective. Such organs, It seems, don't change the fatty foods eaten by stout persons Into heat and energy, as they should. . In stead the food fats pass on Into the system unconsumed. Hence, fat layers accumulate under the skin In quiet sfrots, .such as the chin, abdomen, shoul der blades, etc. I,et that digestive defect be corrected and the formerly fat person goes back to his or her orlgtaaj shape. You can prove this on yourself. Seventy-five cents will secure from your druggist one of the large cases of Marmola Pre scription. Tablets recently licensed for sale by the Marmola Company. Dept 66U, Detroit. Mich. Take one of these tablets after each meal and at bedtime and the demonstration starts right there. Very soon you will experience a new sense of digestive comfort and a delightful feeling of increased energy which should be followed in due season by a gradual, uniform decrease oi your fat. Durlnc the demonstration period you eat and drink as formerljs; remember. The tablets need no help from either dieting or exercising, nevertheless the dally, loss should approximate 10 to IS ounces a day. Now. WHY ts It you get tninr wny Is It the fat just seems to slip away. leaving your flesh: smooth, firm and wrlnkleless? Simply because Marmola corrects that digestive defect, thereby, slopping further fat accumulation and enabling, the body forces to harmlessly dissolve what has. already gathered. and supplied only the old King home, but as neighbors decided they would like a supply of the water a four Inch Iron pipe was put In and branches run to several houses in that neighborhood.
