' : V Xaapndn Banana Mn to Tight. ;, During the present-week several car of banana from Independent shipper are, due to arrive In the Portland mar . ket. The bananas are eaid to be of unusually fine quality. While ship menta of one car of bananas by inde Jiendent people have been made to thl market at different times, this Is the first Instance wherein the Independ ents have decided to sain a. firm root Jiold here and make regular shipment Jn competition wth the united ruu rompanv. For years the fruit and pro duce trade of the- Pacific northwest has been under the thumb of the bis fruit shippers and has been compelled en numerous occasions to accept car loads of bananas upon . which they would lose money. ' Failure to accept each and every car of bananas ent to a firm is said to be punishable iy the refusal of the T'nlted Fruit com- Yanv tn mak. further aalea to the. of fering; firm.. This manner, of treating the produce trade -of this section has resulted In unusually high prices on the tropical fruit all through the Pa " cific northwest- because the wholesal ers became very tired of losing; money all the time and therefore put . the Iiigh charge back to tTie retailer, who Jn turn kicked It back to the eon ' turner, who always, pays the freight In the end. ,.- : :-?- ;-v '.-:,' WOl BeU Banana Cnapr. ';-.;'. According to those In , charge of bringing the Independent bananas to the city, sales of the free-from-trust fruit will be made at lower prices be cause the supplies can be purchased for less than the big fruit dispatching company will sell at. " , To the retail trade the cheapening of banana prices means a boom In the trade because with lower values con- burners will purchase more freely and ' as every retailer knows : the , cheaper tirlces are. the more monev he makes, . Therefore the retail trade awaits the initial supplies of the independents In this city with much favor, , -v y tv-' Old Onions Ar Plrmw. , Old onions are showing additional firmness today and most interests are today nuking $3 per 108 pounds for - best 1908 Oregons. Another car of Texas Bermudas arrived in this niorn . ing and was quoted at former vices;, movement being quite good. rotate Market Is Higher. Higher 'prices Jn the potato market here are shown as a result of the firm er tone In the south and the offering of higher prices for southern ship ment. With outside buyers freely of- fering 11.60 for select quality at coun try shipping points it costs 11.70 to land the potatoes on board cars here end taking shrinkage Into consideration tnese same potatoes coma not oe soia at a profit under tt.
