v. - THE OREGON v SUNDAY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SUNDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY, 21, 1909. u n I i -. 7 P jL .:,..W-., .- REPARATIONS for the Washing ton's birthday relebration tomor row 'anj the county fair given for the benefit of the. People's j. Institute yesterday were the rhlef points of activity last week. Two of Cie mont prominent Washing-ton" birthday affairs will be the muslcale to on given by Mrs. John A. Keating In the afternooft to the .Daughters of the American Revolution and the - banquet to be el ven in the evening at Hotel Portland by the Sons and Daughters of iu Kevolutlon. At the latter VV. l. V 'heelwright will be ' the. toastmastcr Mid C. E. S. Wood the chief speaker. There have been two or three large " affairs the past week which were prob ably planned a long time ago before the county lair came up and usurped the horizon. These were given as sched uled and were largely attended, but eldom has there been a week with such a dearth of small events, the kind that are crraaged on the spur of the mo ment a day or two beforehand, and which go to make up the "society but terfly's'! full week. This was because everyone was busy running around get ting costumes for the county, fair and getting people to help them make their own particular department of work , ft success. ., There" was some fear expressed be fore the fair that everylmdy had' been enlisted as -workers so that none would be left to attend as spectators. But the fear was groundless. The armory was filled with a mob of eager pins in ure seekers all afternoon and all even ing.. Many of the spectators came in costume" and mingled as village mar keters among the throng and they added much to the enjoyment of the occasion. Doubtless the fair can be pronounced a Kreati-.-BucceKs. Everything wa well pMtronlzed. The crowds hung curiously about the recesses of the fortune tellers .. I ...... c 1 ' i u J r i i- Madame Vashtl , Luna, de Luna and I Maaame la Claire never were belter patronized. " " , . People were more patient than usuaj with the Incessant organ grinding, and they smiled patronizingly upon the ragged little dagoes, arid the impish lit tle monkeys. Popcorn menand eandy-on-the-stick men were besieged Instead of besieging.,- Crowds gathered In rapt -admiration ab-ut thn ,- hurJyjcurfltfjL The chariot races filled the vast crowds with thrill after thrill.. - The German garden, ran freely withait 'tcense frem the city apd everyone sat there openly wi input xajrp or arrest The aalry ap pealed to many who had been reared n 1U products and the fair maidens there in their cleanly frocks and aprons and wtth their happy singing; drew many to their corner. The living plc- i.uiks were reaiiy oenutirui end vied with the best art galleries. The side chows attracted ' great curious crowds eager to view the wonders of the world. A remarkable 4hlng was the manner y in which so many "doubled'.' as they say . on the stage. There wre some strenu ous and .enthusiastic .workers who did three or four "tunta." so Roarer wore they t help the cause. And one trould . almost ' swear ' b had seen- double -or triple several times. . - . .... V . "vt'ednesday Venina; . Mr. and v Mrs. David S.
