Captain 1 Lie, reached the harbor at 8 o'clock this morning and dropped anchor oft the ' mllla ot the, Eastern & Western Ium- - ber company. She will shift to the f mllla of tneT Xnnian-Poalaen Lumber ' company aoon to load . lumber for Shanghai, under charter . to Balfour, ''Guthrie & Co. r , The Bella is In ballaat from La Boca, Panama, but , called at San Josa de . Guatemala and . Acapulco on the way north the owners thinking that' pos , albly she. would be desirable for a cof , fee cargo from tha Central American C exporting jjorts. ; But there was no de mand for tonnage and la the-meantime the lumber charter was picked up, H. N. Burchard of Seattle came north from San Jose de Guatemala aa purser. Captain Lie reports a pleasant voy age from Panama exoepttng-for two nights when near the mouth of the Columbia river. The wind gained the , velocity of a hurricane and the sea ran - so high that the big freighter nearly rolled over, But lying high on the wa ter she did not ship many seas. In the latitude of -Los Angels and , some distance off shore a miniature : waterspout waa sighted driving over . the ocean with great speed. But it traveled in the opposite direction to the-steamer and so created no uneasi ness on board. - The Selja is a new craft, having been out but two years.' She belongs to ' Wilhelm Jebsen of Bergen, and carries a crew1 composed' principally of -Soandi-- navlans. She came to the Pacific coast . aoon after having been fitted out for her first voyage and recently took a 'cargo of lumber from Fuget sound to La Boca. The British steamer Tymerio, whicn reached Astoria last night from Vic toria, B. C, will be In the harbor late this evening. She left up at 11 o'clock and will co to the mills of the Portland Lumber company to load lumber for Australia, under charter to the Ameri can Trading company, The arrival of the Sella and the Tf ' merto brings the number of tramp steamers in the harbor loading lumber to four, the other two being the British - steamer Boverio and the Norwegian steamer Elsa. The Boverio is at the mills of the Eastern & Western Lumber company loading for Manila and Singa pore, and the Elsa Is at the mills at ' Linnton loading for New Zealand. The four tramps will carry away about 16, 000,000 feet of lumber and all will get away during the early-part, of Febru ary. In addition to these,-the . Oriental liner Nicomedla will take away about (00,000 feet of lumber this trip. Tr MENACE TO NAVIGATION Captain Parsons of Steamer Alliance , Finds Large Tree Adrift. On the way down to Cooa Bay. Cap tain Parsons of the Portland-Coos Bay liner Alliance, sighted an immense up rooted tree floating la a perpendicular position off the Oregon coast directly In the path of vessels bound for Coos Bay. The tree waa fully four feet In diameter and therefore a serious men ace to navigation. To warn other mariners of the dan ger. Captain Parsons immediately ad dressed a wireless message to the North Head station asking that the proper authorities be notified of the position of the tree, but somehow the message must have been lost in transmission because the first report of the presence of the log was brought Here personally by Captain Parsons when the Alliance returned last night. c "It was the largest tree I have ever seen afloat," said Captain Parsons, "and for a while we thought it a piece of wreckage with sailors clinging to It. We steered for it and then discovered It was an Immense tree that had been carried to sea during a freshet It was large enough to ram almost any craft If hit with some force and so 1 Immediately wired the report in hopes of warning mariners beading that way." The exact location of the. tree when sighted last Tuesday waa latitude 43:66 north, longitude 174:18 west' The Alliance reached Couch street dock at 6 o'clock this morning, bringing freight and passengers. She had ex perienced fairly good weather coming up -the coast , . Chief Officer G. S. Dexter who re. signed will be replaced by M, Nolan, formerly second officer, and the vacated position will be filled by A. Hutchlns, coming here from Puget sound. B. L, Miller bas been appointed chief en gineer to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation last trip .of Chief NeU on, -- ON DBYDOCK FOR REPAIRS Steamer Breakwater Returns to Dock In Disabled Condition. The steamer Breakwater, Captain Macgenn. was towed back to Portland last' night in a disabled condition and will have to go on the drydock before being able to proceed on her way to Coos Bay. The perishable freight Is being discharged today at Alna worth t- dock. " The Breakwater left here Wednesday night for .Coos' with 160 tons of freight and 7 passengers. When near Brook field on the lower Columbia, tha pilot discovered the French bark Rocham- beau at anchor in, the stream and di rectly in the course of the Cooa Bay liner. To avoid a collision the Break . water's anchor was dropped. The tide carried the steamer's stern tip against the Brookfleld wharf with the result that the rudder poet was bent to such an extent aa to make steering impossi ble. ' ' .- ;: . - The O. R. & N. company's towboat , Harvest Queen cam along later and brought the steamer back to Portland, . arriving at Ainsworth dock last night It Is not known how long It will take to reoalr the. rudder nost but it will probably-not take-mora titan a day ur This Is the second ' disaster caused this week by the French bark Rocham buu being at anchor in the channel, -Tuesday morning the Open' River Trans ' portation company's steamer J. N. Teal ran Into the bark when the fatter was at anchor off St Johns. The fog waa very thick at the time., , - -, -.- . -:' '..'" REGULAR LIXE TO PANAMA Vessels to Ply Between San Fran .
