They are just as appropriate for the New Year gifts and Near Year letters and cards as they were for: the Christmas packages. ' ' The holiday stamp movement was un dertaken by the National Red Cross so ciety In its effort to raise funds to fight the great white plague, which Is yearly claiming so many thousands of - vic tims in the United States. Already the society has accumulated a goodly sum by the sale of the stamps, but more money is needed to carry on the great work. Those who have health and money, pleasant homes and hopes for the future are the ones to whom the society is looking for aid in this great campaign.' . . Tuberculosis Is the enemy of all. No one knows when It is coming. It men aces all alike. Anything done therefore to stamp out the plague Is not narity, not philanthropy alone.' It Is self pro tection. For this reason if the heart is not inclined to charity the movement Is one which, looks to the aid and assist ance of all. Those who have Charge of the sales locally are thankful for whaffias been given, but they are hope ful for continued and increasing assist ance during the remaining, days that the-sale ia to continue. When he once had Brown down on the floor, McOowan reached over and bit a piece an Inch long from Brown's ear; at least so Brown says. "Here's the piece," said Brown, draw ing a bottle of alcohol from his pocket. r'Why didn't you have It sewed on?" he was asked. - "We couldn't find It until this morn ing," he replied. . , V MeOowan, it Is rumored, has already left the city, but a warrant was Issued cut of the municipal court late in tho afternoon .charging him with mayhem, a penitentiary, offense. 1 Automobiling Christmas? The recent election In Con ncticut shows a gain of S8 per cent In prohibition territory-. The stste has now 87 dry towns and 71 "wet." For a slow going New England stste this Is not en couraging for the saloon forces, to say the very least. Among the significant "straws" Is the Increasing abstinence where in the past m have e-rown to emect -the ODDOSlte. Dry banquets are-becoming more and more "tne tning. The growing number of strong articles in journals of national renown and patronage setting forth the dangers of alcoholic beverages to the individual and the weakening innuencea UDon the state should be a sufficient en couragement for the half hearted man or woman who is asking If it pays to do anytmng tor temperance. Not only In our own country, but all over the world advance Is being made 'In the battle against the use of and traffic In alcoholic - beverages. Anti-alcoholic sentiment Is growing in Germany faster than It is among our German-Americans. It Is true that the house of lords in Eng land has recently rejected a licensing bill passed by the house of commons by a large majority, but the uprising of the people in the republican kingdom augurs poorly for the continuance of this sort of thing, snd the temperance folk art anything but discouraged. ' - The Swiss federal council has recently prohibited absinthe, and Is following this action -with an investigation of .' the wnoie subject or alcoholism. Accurate statistics will be gathered concerning the effects of alcoholic liquors upon the mental, physical and financial welfare of the people.-- The effect of alcohol in the production of insanity, ita effect upon crime and accidents, its responsi bility for defective and abnormal chil dren will be carefully and exhaustively studied, and the results of such study taouiatea, tnus maKing a contrmution to reform literature whose value can,, not be overestimated. .
