. There was a weaker feeling In the
egg market along Front street during
the day. While one or two houses con
tinue to say thev are able to secure as
high as 45c for eggs It is a noticeable
fact that dealers who are offering free
ly at 40c are unable to move them
quite as well as might be expected. The
egg situation as a. whole is somewhat
weaker with several wholesale grocer

are again in quite liberal supply but the

Chicago, Dec. 23. Wheat started with
the wrong foot forward or back at the
opening . of the Chicago market today.
There was a continuation of selling of
long wheat by extremely tired holders
and this brought about a lower range
of values at the opening. The Improve
ment noted waa made later in the day.
Opening weakness here was due some
what to another flop of sentiment In
foreign markets. The . advance and
better feeling abroad yesterday was be
lieved to be the start of a bull cam

trading showed reversed conditions.
Liverpool started very dull with un

duller and somewhat weak, with values

Campaign Publicity Scheme..
From the Washington (D. C.) Times.
Tne statement is maae that the cam
paign cost teas money than any in a
numoer or years, for this desirable
result we have to thank corrupt practices
acts in various states which have made
the purchase of votes a more difficult
thing tne state or tne pubjic mind will
not countenance that sort of thing to
the extent it once did and the publicity
of the contribuions. Now that it is
seen that so large a sum can be raised.
even though the names of contributors
are given out, -one argument against
publicity is done away with. Indeed, it
may follow that a desire to figure on
the list as a liberal giver will promote
contributions. The bulk of the money
comes from persons who have an entire
rigni to contribute to the party of their
cnoice ana against whose motives noth
ing can be alleged. There is no reason
why the transaction should not be open
and aboveboard, as It concerns both the
receipt ana the expenditure of the fund.
