Story of Gary Is the Story of a City of Enchantment Created Over Night by Those Mighty Conjurers, "Wealth and Brains. By FREDERIC J. IIASKEV. CCopyright. 1908. by Frederlo J. Haakln.) ... Washington. Dec. 22. On the shorea of Lake Michigan there Is growing up, in the night time, as it were, an In diana city that has promised Itself and ' its promoters that It will some day rival 'Chicago. This will be no city t grown from a village, with streets that were once bridle paths, and with a system of progress that has followed no law but the lines of least resistance. For Just as Major L'Enfant laid out Washington, and Brlgham Young planned Salt Lake City,, bo Gary, Ind. haa been planned and eagle-eyed business men are going to nee that there is no de viation from the rules made. Gary was started by the United States Steel corporation two years ago. It had become necessary to enlarge the works and instead of adding to the existing plants they decided to build a city of their own with good shipping facilities that could be expanded indefinitely to meet the needs of the mafr&Tacturers. The lt thev selected is. 26 miles south east of Chicago, a long etretfiSi of sand dunes and shallows cut by the Calu met river and aa unpromising a pros pact as the novice In city building could Imagine. But they who have started to build there have seen further than the superficial things that the novice sees, and from the sand dunes will rise a city -of worth, just aa uoiden uate r&rit in Pan Francisco came to crown the re claimed sand dunes beyond the city. " Population of 15,000 is Two Tears. A i j. ! 'V Senator Jonathan P. Dolllver of Iowa, who has Introduced In the senate a far reaching bill for the regulation of future issues of securi ties by transportation companies and telegraph and telephone companies they had tho railway tracks entering the city elevated to the proper height In the fall of 1909 there etood on the (before the city was born and put In the concrete iounaation .ana arenways, ino ouse, while the passing trains seemed long corrldora and approaches that will present site of Gary a solitary gun club house, while the passing trains seemei to hurry to get away from the lonell Today hirlck ness of the sand and the jcn there is a well defined clty'W of business houses or stona and cement, several miles o and. macadamtz3d street churches, residences slid banks with apopulation of 16,000 people. It Is expected that In 10 yeara the popula tion will be 100.000, If not more, for tne sttu wonts aione expect to employ so, 000 or 60,000 workmen. Plans for a City or 800,000 have already been made. Therlnclpal thoroughfare, Broadway. J laid out 100 feet wide. The residence Ktreels are 60 and 80 feet and the alloys 80 feet. On the main streets a new kind ef concrete paving haa been successfully experimented with. The residence streets are macadamised with a granite screen ing, there are 24-inch gutters and ourb Ings of concrete, while the sidewalks In the business district are six and seven fnet wide, and those In the residence district five feet. The ma jority of the railroads will run Into the union station, though three below the city will not. However, the Gary and Western Union XAntt Belt will connect practically all the ronds. Improvements on the: lake for ship ping facilities have resulted ' in the building of a- slip where on last. In fact. Gary bears in manv re spects the air oi a settled, long lived . In city, witnoat the attendant sdvan , tnges of old houses, abandoned rookeries and unsanitary conditions.' It has not, however, the look of the city that has started by accident or with a proble matic) future, for H atarted with its fu ture guaranteed. An Arabian Higrhts CJty. Within the two years many of the sand dunes have been leveled, the shal lows are disanuearlns: and erass and trees are reclaiming the lands that have not already been preempted for building purposes. J,ast year 2000 trees were set out. and this year 2000 more. Two parks have been laid out and are being Improved, and next summer a theatre will be built, modeled after the Colonial of Chicago. A stone school house was finished in September and the school population so far overfilled It that an other, to cost several hundred thou sand dollars, has already been begun. , It is all very much like a story of Aladdin and his wonderful lamp. The giant brains of a big corporation said, "Here we build a city. Here will be the streets, there the houses, there the mills, there the depot, there the public buildings!" And apparently from no where sprang engineers, architects, workmen and machinery, and each thing appeared as the corporation said It would, and all la coming about with little appearance of haste. There must be a union depot, declared Ibe builders. And Instead of uniting until the whole thing would be done at once, with consequent detriment to traf fic and inconvenience to the traveler ront a series of Klgantlc docks for sea-going vessels, and the ; ilmlumet river will be deepened, and cut through, and made Into a ship canal Hi at will offer further shipping facilities. The trackage in the railroad yards about uary already approximates 300 miles or more, and the city, like the work of the big corporation for whose use it Lwas created, sees no stopping place ri'ii ns expansion. Judge li it. Garv for whom, the future rival of Chicago was named, sees in the development of the steel industry an assured future for Gary that will bring a bigger pop ulation each year, until within a de cade It will rival St. Louis In size and power. Modal Apartments for Workman, There are already 6000 workmen on the grounds, the majority in the steel plants, the others on construction work. This is one tenth the number that the sieei company expects to have in Its works alone In 10 years. The housing of these workmen will proceed along Improved lines. Just now they are liv ing wnerever iney can rind a place, making shift at anything until their houses can be ready for them. Some are m tents and shacks, that have an parently crept close in the lee of the sand dunes to escape the biting winds rrom me iae. others rare better In more comrortanle houses. The law re quiring two story and basement struc tures for residences applies to tho mill hands as well. To meet their needs model apartment houses are being built, two story affairs of four rooms each, two above and two below. Fifty or more have been completed and othere are being erected as rapidly aa men and machinery can do it Speculators have no chance here, where land deals are concerned, for he who buys, land must agree to build in 18 months, and the 'title passes to him only when he ouiios. it is permanent residents am quicker ! oundry THE SECRET OUT. n Wide Open Statement. To refute the rnaDjr false and mali cious attacks, bogus formulae and other untruthful statements published concern ing Doctor Pierce's World-famed Family Medicines, the Doctor has decided to pub lish all the ingredients entering Into his Favorite Prescription" for weak women and his equally iwpular tonic alterative known as . Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. Hereafter every bottle of these medicines leaving the great Labo ratory at Buffalo, N. Y., will bear upon it a full list of all the ingredients entering Into the compound. Both are mad entirely from native medicinal roots. The Ingredients of the "Golden Medical Discovery" being a non-alcoholic extract pf Golden Heal root. Queen's nx.t, JJlack-cherrybark, Mandrake root. I?!ood root and Stone root, preserved by chemi cally pure glycerine. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, being made of native medicinal roots, is next to Nature and Is the best tonic you can use. It fills the blood with rich, red blood corpuscles. It gives you a feeling of strength, and It puts sunshine into vour system as no other remedy can. that Is why Dr. Pierce's Golden Med ical Discovery has been such a favorite for the past forty years. No man fa woman can be either healthy or hand some who has impurities In the blood, for it will show in Dimples, boils, and eruptions. In the dark clrclv under the yes and In the sallow compllon. After taking "Golden Medical Discovery" you are bound to have pink cheeks and a fresh complexion. The muscles get the good, rich, red blood, that puts on strength. It Is a flesh builder, but not a fat builder. As an example of the good results thus Obtained, note the following letter: . "In tbeyear lx. I bad an attack of Indl gtton and got so bad that my home doctor Mid he could pot do hie any good.? writes Mr. ti. Trent, if Gordonvtlle, Texas. "I wrote to von and you advised me to use I'r. Cou'.d also do a much work In a day as I ever could. I have not suffered from the trouble since." MEDICINES or KNOWN COMPOSITION. If suffering from an obstinate malady. r men wouiu one naiurnny preier to take, a medicine of known composition, every ingredient of which has the endorsement of the most eminent, medical practition ers and writers, or one. which, for aught you may know, may he made up ot very Inefficient and even harmful agents? Ii it not best to insist upon knowing what one Is taking, as Is everv one's right,' whether bnitig prescribed for by the family physician or making use of a proprietary remedy? We think so, es specially in view of the disparaging articles concerning Various aavertlsed remedies with which the drug and med ical Journals have been filled for months past. Doctor Pierce courts the severest criticism of the medical profession as to the value of his published formula, con fident that he will receive fair treatment from all fair-rafnded, well qualified breth ren of the medical profession who cannot be blamed ftir not endorsing medlclaes of the composition of which they and the people are kept In ignorance. It is expected that the mills of the United States Steel corporation will be exceeded in time only by the Krupps snd they may surpass even these Judging by the great bounds that steel has made In the past 10 years. With Gary as a manufactory site there will be room for expansion, and, what Is of equal Importance, room for steel using iiiuun io locate mere ana create a market. The American Car ry company has established It self next to the steel mills, and In Its manuracture or steel railway cars will employ 3000 men. The American Bridge & Iron works has found a suit able site there, and other subsidiary manufactories such as the American Steel & Wire comnanv and the Ameri. can Tin Plate company are coming. Tlia superior facilities afforded by nearness to the steel plants and the lake, rail ways and canal for shipping will at tract numerous other plants which Gary will welcome, and it Is believed that ("hlcago will lose a goodly number of growing factories that have found no room for expansion in their present location. Especially those using the output of the United States Steel cor poration's plants are expected. Cosmopolitan Population. . True to its cosmonnlttsn anir a has drawn Its population from a wide ly scattered area of this country. And true to its determination to build a stable and permanent institution, it has chosen the men who can best do that work. On Broadway alone there are business buildings erected and occupied by men from 13 different states, and each has brought with him an abiding faith and pride in the new city, as has each of the other members of the several thousand population. The good government, the clvio pride, the excellent laws enacted for the munici pality ell prove the standard of Its citizenry. Gold Epoon la Its Mouth. If Its rise has. been so great over so many difficulties, what may one not expect of Gary that has al ready done so much In two years' time? For Gary Is no pioneer's child. It Is the child of wealth and prosperity, born Into a world where" money and brains -had already planned' out every atep of Its-career for a century ahead. and where every modern Invention and idea and opportunity was laid as a gift In Its hand by Its fond parent, the Uni ted States Steel corooratlon.
