WANTED TO DIE;
GOES TO EOCKPILE
Herbert A. Cohan believed
last night that within 24 hours
he would be dead. He told hi 4
landlady so. and she believed
him, too. But when the end of
the 14 hoars rolls around tonight
where do you Imagine Cohan 4
will be? Not in the morgue, by
any means. Instead he will be 4
out at the Kelly Butte rockplle,
and tomorrow morning he will
begin breaking rock.
Cohan roomed at 22 North Sixth 4
street. He went out last even-
ing and bought a bottle of car- 4
bollc acid. When he returned he 4
told the landlady all about his 4
plan to take his life. She was 4
frightened, and Patrolman Peter-
son was called. When the police-
man arrived Cohan was still ar-
ranging the details of his suicide.
Alas, for his cherished hope of
soon being a corpse! He was ar- 4
rested and on a charge of dls-
orderly conduct. He had fright-
ened the landlady. 4
Today he was sentenced to 10
days at the rockpile.

CAMPAIGN ON FOR
STATE PROHIBITION
The various temperance societies of
the state all of which have headquar-1
ters in Portland, have been studying
uucouuii a LampniKii lur mala
prohibition for some time. The Woman's
Temperance Union declared for such a
campaign in its recent convention and
committees were appointed to carry out
such purposes, while the anti-saloon
league has also been .looking to that
d
Oregon in line with the lengthening
list of the states that have outlawed the
traffic and manufacture In intoxicating
liquors.
The vigor which characterises the
plans of the united societies and the
fact that they will work as a unit in
this matter augurs success.

LECTURES OX GREEKS,
ANCIENT AND MODERN
Professor J. P. Leotsakas, a graduate
of the University of Athens, Greece, and
an Instructor In that Institution, gave
his lecture on the "Ancient and Mod
ern Greeks" in the assembly room of
the East Side High school last night
The lecturer was greeted by an audience
composed largely of history pupils In
the East Side High school.
Professor Leotsakas began with the
"early ureeft mythology and traced the
story of the development of the race
down io modern times. stereopueon
views were used in illustrating the
early Greek wars, and many of the
finest productions of Greek sculptors
were thrown on the canvas. He quoted
from Homer's "Iliad' in the original
Greek, and from Virgil's "Aeneid" in the
original Latin.
views of modern Greek men and
women were reproduced, -showing that
in the cities the Greeks of today dress
very much like Parisians, while the
mountaineers in the mountains cling to
the peasant costumes.
Next Wednesday evening, December
23, Professor Leotsakas will deliver a
lecture in the assembly room of the
West Side High school, his subject be
ing "Greek Athletes, Ancient and
Modern."
