COME TO LOAD WHEAT AND LUMBER Departure of Vessels Completing Wheat Cargoes Will Leave Harbor Nearly Deserted Unles Fleet Eu route Shows Up Before Long. The foreign merchant fleet In the harbor Is dwindling down to very small proportions, one vessel after another taking departure while vessels booked to fill the vacancies are alow arriving-. The French bark Bossuet which came here Kovemner 14 with a cargo of coal from Australia, will begin loading wheat in -a few Java and as there are only a few ahtpa here for the present mak ing demands upon the stevedoring forces it la supposed that she will get very quick dispatch. When the Bossuet departs there will he only 12 sal.lng vessels of foreign register In the river. Of these, seven are on the iHenaaged list, the others helng under ct.arter to carry away wheet to Kurope. The British bark Lydgate, the Fretjch bark Bully and the German ship Oregon are loHdlng at the wharves and will clear before the end of the year. With these vessels Rone there will remain only a' handful of disengaged windjammers In the river unless some of the vessels en route show up. Among the fleet nearlng the river are the Frenrh harks AmiiereH. C'rlllon, Alice. Kngene 8chnelder. Desatx, I .a Tour de Auvergne and Thiers. Of theae the La Tour de Auvergne comes from Hamburg by way of Kobart with general cargo, the Alice comes from London oy way of Ifnhart and the Eugene 8r1inelder is en route from Antwerp by way of Ho hart. Thes vessels, too. bring some freneral cargo. The others come In bal HSt. The Alice, Asnleres and Kngene Schnei der nr under charter to carry lumber lo Kurope. The Asnieres ana Eugene Schneider, it Is understood, will receive their cargoes at mills on the lower Co lumber, but the Alice will receive at least more of Ijer cargo here. very well pleased with, their' transport tatfon facilities. The Sue H. Elmore reached Astoria last night and will be at Couch street dock- this evening. She Is booked . to go out again tomorrow night. The Ar go is booked to arrive at Oak street dock late tonight and- her agent de clares every effort will be made to get ' her ready for . departure tomorrow morning. But there will be a splendid opportunity for a. test of speed of the respective boats, should she not gat away from her dock until tomorrow night, when the Elmore departs. HAS BEEN HERE SlX TIMES Captain Revel of French Bark Ar men Holds Novel Record. Captain Revel, master of the French bark Armen, which arrived here a cou ple of days ago to load wheat for Eu rope, is here for the sixth time with his vessel. This Is believed to be the freatest number of voyages any one 'rench windjammer has made to Port land and 'Captain Revel says he has entered the river enough times now to almost be entitled to a pilot's branch. During the many times the Armen has been here she never once had any trpuble. but on the contrary always had smooth sailing In the vicinity of the mouth of the river excepting on the last voyage, when a strong gale was mak ing things lively. The wind,blew at the rate'of 78 miles an hour for a while iuto the river one of the big seas broke over the vessel s stern and set the wnoie deck awash. The, captain, pilot and several of the crew narrowly escaped being caught in the rush of water and carried overboard. Less than a month ago there was no regular ser vice between Portland and Tillamook hut now the trade enjoys two at least every JO days. The steamers In commission are the flne H. Elmore and the Argo. the latter opposition boat to the former, which up till the time the Argo was placed on the run, operated between Astoria and Tillamook. Open River Steamer Inland Empire Will Take Big Initial Cargo. That large quantities of freight will be handled by the Open River Transpor tation company's steamer Inland Em pire when she goes into regular service on the upper Columbia river 1 already indicated by the fact that several car- f;oes of goods have already been prom Bed for tho first trip, which will be made next week. The Inland Empire is the first of two lame steamers to be onerated resularlv between Celilo and points on the upper t oiumoia in conjunction witn tne serv ice maintained on the river between Portland and Big Eddy at the lower nd of the portage road. Lo renz, a well known eastern Oregon news paper woman are In this city, spending their honeymcon after a romantic court ship. Weeks was playing at Union, Or., and Miss Lorenz attended the play. Before the actor's engagement in eastern Ore gon terminated he had agreed to sign a life contract with the charming Jour-' nallst. His work called him to Arizona and a few days ago he was Joined by Miss Lorenz. Mrs4 Weeks was one of the best known newspaper women in the west and for several years covered the eastern Oregon field for The Journal and East Oregon Ian making her headquarters at Pendleton.
