i I TrfE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL PORTLAND, TUESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 15, 1808. LUTKEIIER S CAFE AGAIN HELD OF ' Union Avenue Saloon Man and Three Patrons Forced to Give Up Valuables to Two Kobbers .Burglars . GromBolder. ; For the second time within a month, the saloon of F. W. Lutkemeler, 49 Union avenue, was held up last night and $69.50 in money beside a gold watch and chain was taken from the proprie tor and three others who were in the eaioon at thetlme. , Two men entered the saloon at 11:40, and drawing their revolvers command ed Mr. Lutkemeier and his three pa trons who were playing pool in a room to the rear, to throw up their hands. All four men were lined up against the back wall with thalr backs toward the .robbers, and while. one of the stickup artists covered them with a long nickel plated revolver, his confederate opened the cash register, took 160 in coin and then searched the pockets of the vic tims so coolly and deliberately that all re certain that the robbers were pro fessionals. .' Ryberg, one of those held up, say that the man who searched his pock ets was so well trained in the art that Yiot once did he feel the hand of the robber in his clothing, but his valua bles were taken, nevertheless. During the performance, the proprietor's big St. Bernard dog, which was shot during a former holdup, only a few weeks ago, lay tied to an iron railing which en closes the stove. The animal watched the robbers closely, -whining once or twice, but was too-weak to stir. Too Weak to right. In the previous robbery the dog sprang viciously at the footpad and was shot and almost fatally wounded. ' It is sun in a very weakened condition, and had it not been for this Mr. Lutkemeier Is confident that the robbers would have had another battle with the dumb witness. F. Garner was robbed of 19, 8. Ry berg 11.60 and R. E. Pendleton was re lieved of 9 and a gold watch and chain. Mr. Lutkemeier suffered the greatest loss, as over $50 was taken from his cash register. It is believed that three men were implicated in the crime, although only two entered the saloon. One man, it is thought, stood guard on the-outside. Just three hours before the saloon holdup, the confectlonerv store of C. Hamilton, at 31 East Seventh street, was entered by three men wearing red bandana handkerchiefs and answering in a general way the description of the saloon robbers. Their guns were the same and it is little doubted that they were the same men. Mr. Hamilton, the proprietor of the little confectionery, is 2 years of age and It was feared for a time that the shock of the Incident might go hard with him. In Are right's Ola re. The store Is on.tha corner of East Seventh and Market streets, directly under nn arc light, which casts Its rays Into the shop. One man entered the store and asked for cigarette - papers. Mr. Hamilton handed lilm a package, but they did not seem to please the thug and he asked to have a nickel , rhanged Into one cent pieces. The aged proprietor got down his cash drawer just as the two confederates of the first thug rushed in, drew their revolvers and commanded the old man to hold his hands uj. "Not by a slitht." answered the shopkeeper, and rushed Into a back room where his daughtPr-ln-law lay sick TWO FRANCIS AVENUES CAUSE : . .SUBURBAN COMEDY OF ERRORS Kenllworth la getting tired of ot pull ing Mount Tabor's chestnuts out of the Ire.' Kenllworth wants a fire station, and a petition asking the cltv council to erect one in that district haa been circulated by E. F. Moldenhauer. of 785 East Thirty-second street -. Fire Chief Camnbell has been out and looked over the pro posed site, which Is, at the corner of rrancis avenue (in nenuwortn) street and has and approved Greenwood of it. Mount Tabor got wind of the fact that the fire chief had ar) Droved a site on Francis avenue for a fire station, and jumping once more to the conclu sion that the Mount Tabor Francis ave nue was meant, has called a meetlng of the Mount Tabor citizens for tonight to protest against what appears to be a change in the proposed new engine house for that district. But their anxiety is without founda tion. The fire chief has no intention of recommending the erection of an engine house on Francis avenue In Mount Ta bor. But the residents of Kenllworth are worried for fear a resolution of pro test may be adopted by the Mount Ta borltes against the Francis avenue en gine house. Mr. Moldenhauer says that Mount Tabor Is not concerned In this proposition at all. That district can have its engine house where It pleases, for all Kenllworth cares, but Kenll worth does not want Mount Tabor to anocK me rrancla avenue proposition on the mistaken notion that Mount Ta bor's Francis avenue ia meant. Kenllworth is afraid that there will be another mlx-up similar to the one which resulted in Mount Tabor getting us rrancis avenue graded when it was Intended to grade Francis avenue In Kenllworth. That incident was some time ago. The Kenllworth Improve ment club adopted a resolution calling upon me cny council io grade irrancia avenue. This petition was presented to the council anil art4 linnn fiimMhlv This city engineer was ordered to have tne worx aone. But time passed and there was no sign of the street being Improved. A committee headed by B. F. Moldenhauer waited upon the city council and want ed to know why. "Why, Francis avenue Is being graded now," replied the counellmen. "It Is not," said Mr. Moldenhauer. I have lived on that street for 30 years, and I have seen no-work being done yet." An Investigation followed, and it was discovered that Kenilworth's petition hsd resulted in Mount Tabor getting a street graded. And now comes the mlx-up over the engine house. Kenll worth is getting weary. Mount Tabor please take notice.
