Sometimes I thought they got less, but
after spending all the money I could

Among the items cut out by the
committee were several new engine

proposed stations, one at Eajit Twmtv.

Messrs. Sullivan and Swett as entirely

CREMATORY MT
. THREATEII CITY
A meeting of the citlxens of Portland
to discuss the question of securing a
new garbage crematory has been called
by the Portland realty board, to be
held next Tuesday night at the com
mercial club. S. H. Oruber, president
of the municipal affairs committee of
the chamber of commerce has con
sentedMo address the. meeting, and all
cltisens interested in this Important
matter are invited to be present.
Portland Is In Imminent danger of an
Invasion of the plague on account of
the countless thousands of rats which
throng the old city crematory on Guild's
lake, according to a circular letter Is
sued yesterday by the realty board. The
letter quotes Superintendent Daggett of
the crematory to this effect, and says
that Mr. Daggett's statements, made
before the municipal affairs committee
of the chamber of commerce last
Wednesday are corroborated by Dr.
Esther Pohl, city health officer.
Mr. Daggett's staitling statements Is
as follows:
"Rats hundreds of thousands of
them multitudes of them, no one
knows how many, breeding, Increasing
and multiplying every minute, every
day, every hour, in the festering, cor
rupting dump covering four acres of
ground adjacent to the city crematory
a crematory originally built to accom
modate a cltv of 70,000 inhabitants,
with a capacity of 26 tons' of garbage
a day, now receiving from 86 to 40 tons
and what is not consumed 4s dumped
on four acres of land adjoining, with
the result that It affords a breeding
place lor countless tnousanas or rats,
which form a menace to the health of
the city which few .of . our people are
aware of."
Dr. Pohl declares that the first period
of high water In Portland would result
in submerging the dump and driving
tne rats to mgner grouna. wnere tney
would Invade the dwellings and scatter
through the city. These rats may al
ready be infected with plague, and If
they are, the consequences to the city
would oe appalling.
