Pullman, Wash.. Dec. 10. At today's
session of the dry farming convention.
Professor II. T. Frenrh of Moscow, de
livered a strong argument in favor of
winter dairying, upholding it as far
more profitable than summer dairying,
In conjunction with wheat growing.
"We have found that we can winter
twice or three times as many cows as
we can 'summer," he said. "I think
every farmer should have from 10 to 20
cows to winter, thereby making it easy
to raise winter hogs and calves.'
Professor R. K. Hystop of Moscow,
In speaking of the corn crop advised
against sending cast for sec.
"We hope that manv of tnese Idaho
hills will be sown in corn next year,
he said.
"Don't try to breed long ears; let
your corn mature with a medium sized
shank attachment, and uniform rows of
kernels well spaced. Be sure It germi
nates well and strong."

EXPECTED TO LIVE

BakersfieJd. Cal.. Pec. 10. Hope of
saving the life of Adrian Von Plank,
the Portland, Or., actor, who was shot
by E. N. Blacker, was abandoned by
the attending physicians today. There
Is little change In Von Plank s condition
and the doctors fear he wll not rally
sufficiently to bear the strain of an
operation for the removal of the four
bullet lodged in his body.
Although he realizes his serious position-

brief consultation with his wife last
night the prisoner forgave her unfaith
fulness and she swore future con

BUY HYDRANTS ONLY
The council voted unfavorably yester
day on an ordinance releasing $42,000
in a special hydrant fund, back to the
water board to be used for other pur
poaes. The money was asked for by
the water board for the purchase of
hydrants, but these were bought with
mnnev taken from the Keneral fund.
The mayor and water board now think j
the $42,000 could be srent to more ad
vantage In the extension of mains. The
council holds that the appropriation
must be expended for its original ob

Joseph Jacobs, Twice Sentenced for
Selling Liquor.

Eugene, Or., Dec. 10. Joseph Jacobs,
who was given the maximum sentence
by Judge Harris a few days ago for vio
lating the local option law, was again
sentenced to SO days in Jail and to pay
a fine of $500 yesterday, this time oh
a second charge. This makes fines of
$1000 and a Jail sentence of 60 days
against him. ,
J T. Witter of Springfield was fined
$250 on the same charge, and his son.
Pony, was sentenced to 30 days In Jail.

This has been a record-breaking term
of court for conviction of violators of ;
the local option law. Two or three stood ;
trial at first and were found guilty, and 1
h others, seeing there was little hope !
of being cleared by a Jury.i pleaded
fullty. All told, eight or 10 nien have
een sentenced for the offense at this
term.

Cannon threw cold water on the Rivers
and Harbors congress here today by
promising to oppose- the plana of the
organization and by Insisting that
"talk is cheap, but ..action Is another
thing." - v .
The .speaker, without whose aid ther.
Is little hop of gaining the appropria
tions desired, went far toward dampen
ing the ardor of the enthusiastic mem
bers of the congress. He took a posi
tion exactly, opposite that of president
Koosevelt, ' who -declared:
"If we haven't the funds to meet the
expense, let!s Issue bonds."
The grizzled veteran walked to the
front of the platform and said:
"It is pretty hard to look Into the
faces of these delegates and not say
something agreeable. In view of my
action In the next two and a half
months, 1 wouldn't be true to myself
or true (to you. If I were not candid
with you, so fr as my vote is con
cerned. .
"If we enter upon policies faster than
we are" ready for them, X would like
for some of you gentlemen to come to
my district and stump for my next elec
tion. .
"I agree that the rivers and harbors
should be sufficiently Improved, but
let's be practical. Talk is . cheap but
action is another thing. , .
"If perchance It were posstblc-r-and
It is not possible that the rivers and
harbors commission reported a bill pro
viding for issuing for 10 years, year by
year, bonds to meet the expense of
waterways improvement to the amount
of $100,000,000, I would not vote for it.
"It would be committing the country
to a policy of putting a great quantity
of ill-advised projects before congress.
"Did it ever occur to you governors
how much easier it is to secure an ap
propriation from the national treasury
than from your own state treasuries?
"I believe in conserving the national
resources," he exclaimed. Turning to
ward Secretary of the Interior Garfield
be continued:
"Garfield, the forest service expended
$4,00,000 last year, and I see they want
almost $6,000,000 this year."

men who robbed the Kast Side bank
Monday evening has been offered by
the bank, and a reward is also offered
by the Royal Insurance company, In
which the bank has a $5000 burglar in
surance policy.
The prlzo offered by the bank for
the capture of (.he robbers Is 10 per
cent of whatever amount of the stolen
money may be recovered through their
capture. The insurance company of
fers a reward of $200 for each of the
men who may be caught.
W. J. Clemens, local manager of the
Royal Insurance company, states that
the affair has been placed entirely in
the hands of the Pinkeftons, so far as
his company is concerned, and that the
company is not depending at alt upon
the police.

Fireman of Great Northern
Train Prevents Express
Being Looted.

Bpokae, Wash., Dec. 10. The sher
iff's deputies and a detail of railroad
detectives are trying to locate the three
men who held up Great Northern pas
senger train No. 4 near Hillyard. seven
miles from this city, last night The
robbers stole the contents of a number
of registered packages, but overlooked
a consignment of $20,000 that was in
the express car. The firemen did not
uncouple the express car when the high
waymen ordered him to handle the un
coupling appliance
The train had Just pulled out of Hill
yard when two masked men were ob
served climbing toward the engine cab
over the coal In the tender. The engi
neer was compelled to bring the train to
a halt. A third robber then appeared.
The mfi.il and baggage cars were hauled
up the track and the former rifled.

man J. H. Pound and W. H. Swltzler

Merrymakers Are Taken to Be For
midable Enemies.
Hood River. Dec. 10. Thinking they
were about to be the victims of a mur
derous attack, a band of Hindus, em
ployed by C. O. Walton of Mount Hood,
who was recently married and was being
given a charivari last night, rushed out
of their bunk house armed with guns
and axes and prepared to assail the
party of din makers. Not until Mr. Wal
ton explained the cause of the unearthly
noise were they satisfied and retired to
their sleeping quarters.
