DIVVER GRAPPLES III SKATING RIliK Biggest, 3Iost Comfortable Hall in Town Chosen for December 17 Match. CLAIMS UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP Better accommodations than ever are to be offered the Portland wrestling fan at the big Dwyer-O'Connell wrest ling match Thursday night, December it. The exposition rink has been se cured for the occasion, and for the several other matches O'Connell will engage In during the winter months. With its comfortable chairs. high ' backed benches and three foot elevated stags the rink will be doubly attractive lo me Tana. The gallery at the rink will accommodate nearly 8000 specta tors, mi or wnom win De oirectiy over the mat. Over 2000 mora can assemble around the ringside, making a seating capacity oi over tuuu. O'Connell began his training the day ..after the Helnrlch match Thursday last . ajid Is now In good condition. He Is building up his strength and adding to his weight to meet Dwyer. Dwyer has sent word from Chicago inai no wiu oe in roruana several days before the match, which will give the local fans ample time to gaze upon him. Dwyer has long been recognized as the best middleweight wrestler in the world and O'Connell will have his bands full standing the big fellow off for an hour. Indications now are that there will be a packed house at the meeting be tween the two clever exponents of the grappling art and it was this reason that prompted the management -to se cure the largest suitable hall in town. Hundreds who remained avay from the Helnrlch match did so for the reason that they wanted to see O'Connell In action against a first rate easterner. They will get their chance when they nee the man who taught President Roosevelt the, game and the other man who taught - Frank Ootch, present cnampion, un wonderful to.e hold that paved his fway to the championship of the world. WHEN SOARING AIR BAG GOT GOAT OF HANDSOME WALTER M'CREDIE TAD JONES flAMES DAN fULLEN FOR AMERICAN Jonas, greatest of Tale quarter- "Tad' backs ,ln the new game, In picking his ait American team for the New York American, gives Dan Pullen, the former university of Washington linesman, now raptaln-eleot and tackle of the West Point team, the position of tackle. Jones' eirtlmate of Pullen is made In the following words: "The two men who must be given the tackle positions are Pullen, of the Army, and 8legUns, f Princeton, and this with full appreciation of the -splendid work of Fish of Harvard, Draper of Pennsyl vania, Horr of Syracuse, and Brides of , Tale. The latter has played more po altions and played them well, than any man who has ever played varsity foot ball. Pullen was the mainstay of the Army team; its strength on the derense, its power on the offense. Ha waa down the field with his ends, and a sure tackier; he was the great factor in spoiling end runs for kick formations, and as far as the Navy Is concerned, was the one man who was 'always In the way.' "As Pullen waa the mainstay of the Army team so was Belgling the real power of the Princeton eleven. With a weak end on one aide and a very med iocre guard upon the other, the big Tiger tackle was taxed to the utmost and at no time waa found wanting." CALIFORNIA OUTLAWS REMAIN FOR WINTER (United Press Leased Wire.) New York, Dec. 9. No action will he taken by the National baseball commit tee at Its present meeting on the peti tion of the California "outlaw" league to the National association of profes sional baseball clubs. President Pulllam, of the National league, and President Johnson of the American league, will go to California this winter to Investigate conditions there and will endeavor to have the National baseball commission remove the "outlaw" taint from the Pacific -coast organization, providing their judgment warrants such a course. William Buckley of Rochester has been signed ns an umpire by the New England league. After the strenuous stunts and footraces he has had to do In several minor leagues "Buck" thinks he can settle down and enjoy the simple life In the New England. MAY PROVE FATAL When Will Portland People Learn the Importance of It? "It's a funny thing the way sotne fellows 11 go up in the air over the least little thing." remarked State Wharfinger "Bill" Dunleavv to an ac quaintance on Howard street wharf the other day, according to the San Fran cisco Bulletin. A moment before the one time ball player had been gazing upon a sailor at work in the shrouds of a full rigged ship and the sight served to put "Dun" In a reminiscent mood. "You know 'Judge' McCredle? Welt. Walter and I were playing on the Oak land team a few seasons back and had many a good time together. To look at the 'Judge,' standing something , over six feet and ready at all times to de fend his side of the question, one would Imagine that he would be the last fel low In the world to take water from, anybody. But that's It, appearances are sometimes deceptive. "We'd all gone down to Los Angeles to playa series of games with the ' Angels,' and for lack of something better to do one forenoon a bunch of us strolled out to Chutes Park. They were having balloon ascensions every hour, and at. my suggestion we hopped Into the basket for a trip up 1000 feet. Mae was a bit frightened .at the Idea of a journey into space, but the reassur ance of the others brought him Into line. From the look on his face as the car left the ground I could see that the 'Judge' did not relish the Idea, how ever, and I determined to have some fun with him. Up, up went the big gas bag, until the people of the earth were transformed Into mere specks, and the city of Los Angeles stretched below us in a long, flat plain. "McCredle's heart dropped Into his shoes before we had cleared the house tops, but the woebegone appearance of the Judge' had no effect upon me. At the crucial moment I whipped out a pocket knife and began sawing away with the back of the blade against one of the ropes attached' to the basket. Of course, this line had nothing to do with the balloon, but Mac thought It did, and after giving one glance in my airection ne an out conapsea. "'For heaven's sake have some sense; this is no place to fool,' he exclaimed, a bit huskily, from the floor of the car. 'Do you want to kill us all?' "The others were wise to the stunt In a minute, but the 'Judge' continued to cower in one corner of the basket, in mortal fear lest any moment might witness our fall from the eky. "At length we descended, and after a light lunch repaired to the ball field: Poor Mac, though, had an Off day. He was chasing balloons all over the right garden and fancied himself plowing through the cloud drifts for the balance of the afternoon. I don't think he forgives me to this day for that trip In midair." GOOD PROGRAF the calisthenic and gymnasium of Professor FAVOR CAMPUS GAME at state uiray (Special DUpatch to The Journal.) University of Oregon, Eugene, Dec. 9. Several important matters will be brought up for consideration at the meeting of the athletic council next Sat urday, chief among them being the ques tion of playing the Oregon-O. A. C. foot ball game In Portland or on the cam puses In the future. The question Is stirring up a great deal of discussion about the campus, the general senti ment being for the campus game, as It Is thought to be due the merchants of both Eugene and Corvallls to show ap preciation of their support by playing the biggest game of the season at home. The difficulties In the way of students attending Portland games will also be a large factor. The matter of graduate manager of athletics will also come up and will probably be acted upon favorably, as It Is thought a salaried manager who ran give up his whole time will be much more efficient than the present sys tem of undergraduate manageruhlp. Other matters to be considered are the hiring of a coach arantinr of "On" snil Manager McEwah's report. GERSPACH CAPTAIN OF WEST SIDE HIGH Fred Gerspach, center on the West Side High school football team for the past three years, was last night elect ed captain of the 1909 football team to succeed Newton Smith. Gerspach is one of the most popular boys In high school. He Is a member of the February, '10, class. He played a great game at center this season, both on offense and defense, and only lacked one vote of being the all lnterscholastlo center. Throughout the season his passing has been uniformly good, both to his quar ter and to the full for punting and place kicking. On defense he has been one of the best of the league and fre quently made tackles on the ends as well as backing up the line In good Bhape. Gerspach will have a hard task turn ing out a winning team next year, for there will be a number of players grad uating from school both In June and February. Now that Longboat has been matched with Dorando, it will be possible to find oui wnetner ne is a good Indian or dead Indian.
