All the would be editors of the state
will have a chance ts exhibit their
, proficiency' January 8 and 7. This op
portunity to display unusual talenta'in
the matter of editing the subjects of
entomology, -economic zoology, and
veterinary science will be proffered by
the United States civil service, depart
ment of agriculture, and will be in the
form of a regular examination. The
position to be filled requires Borne
knowledge of French and German, gen
eral familiarity with literature, gen
eral knowledge of the special subject
chosen and considerable advanced train
ing, so no doubt the number of appli
cants will be great. The salary is
11600 per annum. Positions In the lo
cal, land offices, as register and re
ceiver's lerk, to begin at a salary of
1900, with possibility of advancement
to 11400, are to be filled. Examination
will be held January 6. and 7. l"or all
these examinations application should
be made to Z. A. Leigh, postoffice de
partment.
By handing down a decision Hn the
ease of the Cyclone Mining company
of South Dakota, against the Baker
City Light & Power company, and the
Rock, Creek' Power & Transmission
company, Judge Wolverton in the
United States circuit court hold that
before foreign corporations can have
standing In the Oregon courts they
must comply with the provisions of the
state law, , The Oregon law on this
question requires that corporations or-
ganized in other states must appear
efore the secretary of state before
their business in Oregon is properly
recognized by law. The demurrer of
the plaintiff company la dismissed by
the court. The suit was the result of
a contract for power which it was
claimed was never furnished.
Only $60 was allowed by a Jury as
damages for Philip Fischer, who
claimed $750 for injuries sustained in
being run down bv a delivery wagon
belonging to the Butternut Bread' com
pany at Third and Salmon streets
Fischer was riding a bicycle and alleged
that the accident was due to the care
lessness of the driver of the wagon.
The testimony was heard in Judge
Cleland's department of the circuit
' court, a verdict being returned last
night.
Injured the next day after' he was
employed to drive a delivery wagon for
the Washington creamery, Joe Farrell,
1ft years of age, has begun suit in the
circuit court through his mother and
guardian, Mrs. A. M. Farrell, agalrtst..
A. C. Grossman and W. C, Dey, pro
prietors of the creamery, for $6000
damages. Ha alleges that the horse
furnished him was unruly and that, the
wagon and harness were defeotlve.

Mrs. George Hall, mother of Tt. A.
Marshall of this city, died In Berkeley,
Cal., this morning. Mr. Marshall leaves
this evening to do present at the fu
neral. Mrs. Hall had frequently visited
the family of her son In this city and
had many warm friends here who will
be grieved to hear of her death.
Mrs. Lottie "Mae De Lashmutt has
begun suit In the circuit court for di
vorce from Albert De Lashmutt, whom
she accuses of deserting her In Gold
field, Nev In December, J 907. She
was married In Portland In September,
1902, and desires to resume her maiden
name, Lottie Mae Castro.
The liquor license committee yester
day refused the application of H. Mels
ter for a saloon license at 300 Grand
avenue. Councilman Rushlight objected
to the license being given because he
said the man wanted to conduct a ais-
reputable "seven room" hotel In connec
tion with the saloon.

Denounces Methods of '
Fulton Forces.
Denouncing as untimely," unwar
ranted and un-American the methods
adopted to reinstate boss rule In our
state politics," and calling upon other
granges throughout the state to join
in a movement against the conspiring
politicians, a third powerful grange
organization has Joined in the tight to

sonal program rule in Oregon. The
threatened, grange movement is throw
ing consternation Into the camp of the
insurrectors, and 'along with the news
from Washington is dampening the

The latest grange organisation to
raise the slogan of pure government is
the well known Linn county council.
Patrons of Husbandry. - It Is composed
of delegates representing all the granges
in Linn county, and its utterances are
probably widely reflective of the senti
ment among farmers throughout that
county. .!.',
A feature of distinctive Interest in
the resolution is that the organisation
calls on all the granges to, Join in the
defense of the commonwealth against
the plan for restoration of the old po
litical conditions - in the state. The
resolution, which was passed unani
mously December 6. Is as follows:
"Whereas, The state grange at Its
last session set aside a liberal-sum to
procure competent legal asslstancevtln
defending our direct primary Initiative

ized by the action taken by the Pacific
States Telephone & Telegraph company
in taking this matter up to the highest
tribunals of the land with the avowed
intention of destroying its workings;

she strangled. When her body was
found, life was extinct.
