STREETS ARE CLEANED-DAILY Less than one tenth of the hard sur- race streets of Portland are cleaned daily, according to a statement made In a letter from Superintendent Donaldson of the street cleaning iDartment to the executive ooara yesterday, ine superin tendent explained to Mr. Newell of the executive board, to whom he showed the letter, that some few of the streets are cleaned every day but that others arc not visitea once a montit. "What's the use of raking ud tlles of dirt which I cannot have hauled off the streets I can hire men enough to clean all the streets properly and 1 have au thority to purchase horses and equip ment But the city needs another barn worst of all." said Mr. Donaldson, "and have no power to buy land on wnicn i to build this. Tha city should, build a new. barn to house 40 or SO additional horses and more equipment Wa owe it to property owners that new. streets which they have paid for with good hard money should be kept clean and in gaol condition to withstand tha wear' af weather nd time. . . "No department of the city haa been so handicapped by lack of equipment as the street cleaning service haa been. During the past few years three paving companies have been ; laying surface where formerly only one worked and with the miles and miles of additional pavements to take care of the city has not increased Its equipment or foros. No time should be lost In remedying this condition of affair. i . Assassins Trial , Postponed. fTJnited Pnm Leased Wire.) , Nashville, Tenn., Deo. S.
