Baker, manager of the Baker theatre. The show people had asked to have ihe Baker management restrained from selling parquette and orchestra seats for less than $1.60. and Baker had Insisted on a 75 cent rate. Under the compromise the seats will be sold for 11. Judge Gantenbein issued a tempo rary Injunction In the circuit court, but the compromise settles the matter out of court. ' . , The Woman's Press club of Oregon holds its regular monthly meeting to morrow night at tbe office of the corre sponding secretary, 81 Selling-Hlrsch building.' Grant Rollins, wanted In Portland for obtaining goods by false pretenses, was brought back from Salem last night by Detective Hellyer. Rollins voluntarily surrendered himself to the Salem police, making the statement that his con science hurt him on account of what he had done, and he thought everybody who looked at him could see his guilt Rollins, who is 24 years old. obtained roods of small value from various Port and merchants by presenting forged or ders , of other firms. He says he- had never done anything wrong before. An examination will be held by the United States civil service, for the po sition of veterinarian In the department of quartermaster, Washington, at a sal ary of $1200 per year, December 16. Ap plicants must bo graduates of veterin ary colleges. An examination and test in operating the Gammeter multigraph will be given January 6, 109. to secure eliglbles to fill positions paying from $480 to $720 per annum. For both these examinations application should be made to Z. A. Leigh, postoffice department. Navajo Rugs The W. B. Glafke com pany will continue their sale of Navajo rugs for a few days. Patrolmen Hyde and Craddock, whose specialty la breaking up enjoyable little poker games and fan tan seances, made another raid last night, breaking up a poker game at the Cambridge building. Third and Morrison streets, and landing at the city jail five men who gave the names of John Doane, Bert Beavers, Ben MoMUllen, Harty Young and Harry norland. The men were allowed n 50 on depositing bail. A Meany, proprietor of the Paclfio hotel, 214 'Clay street, complains to the police that some time ago he let a man have two rocking chairs to repair. A few days later the man came again when he was not home and got four more rockers and another chair. Neither the man nor the chairs have been seen since. Meany doesn't know the name of the chair thief, but gives a good descrip tion of him. A meeting of the Waverly-Richmond Improvement club will be held at 8 o'clock tonight at the home of M. J. Morse. East Twenty-eighth and Taggart streets. Secretary Montgomery has sent invitations to all members of -the club and an enthusiastic meeting is expected. The directions are to take the W-W car, get off at Taggart street and walk two blocks east. Seats for the O'Connell-Hetnrtch wrestling match in Merrill's hall next Thursday night have been arranged on the theatre plan. Miss Jones will be assisted by some of her pupils and a chorus of 40 voices. "Admen's Apple Evening" will be cele brated tonight at the Commercial club, beginning at o'clock. The association 1 has received a letter from General ; Passenger" Agent Lomax of the Southern Paclflo and the O. R, A N., In which he states that he will undertake tor : get out a descriptive folder and have it distributed all over tbe east and middle west. . This folder is to contain 24 cares and be printed in colors. - It will contain a grapnio aescription or tne nose festi val, Illustrated by numerous pictures of the festival last year, including many of the floats In the parade, Portland rose gardens, etc. A great many thou sands of these folders are to be printed and distributed, and the association figures that it will bring many addi tional thousands of people to Portland In June. . ? s The big poster which Is to be the of ficial announcement of the Rose Festi val is now being lithographed and will be ready for distribution soon. ' Out of $267,000 worth of bonds, ad vertised only $82,000 worth were sold, that amount covering all the 2 per cent bids. Chairman Rushlight was strongly opposed to the action of Cottel ' and Kellaher. who were the majority voters and held out for good premiums. Mr. Rushlight wanted to sell all bonds for which a premium of 1 per cent and over was offered. He believes that the more bonds that are sold the better the price will be.
