Because he was held up by two men down on the railroad Tuesday night and robbed of 15.75, all the money he: had, Henry. Diedrlckson took to carrying a revolver as a precaution against future misadventures of the same kind. Yes terday Officer Keith looked him over, didn't like his looks, and searched him, finding the gun in his pocket. This morning Diedrlckson appeared before Acting Police Judge Seabrook, confessed that he had the gun when arrested, and was given the extreme penalty, a line of ISO, the Judge refusing; to listen to any explanations. The detectives asked Diedrlckson why he did not report the holdup to the po lice, and he replied that he did not think It would do any good, as there was no probability that they would catch the robbers. Acting- Police Judge Seabrook is doing all he can to break up the gun habit by assessing the limit fine upon each con viction. While there are few people who do not deplore the practice of carrying a gun, there are some who ask if it is not excusable, if not commendable, so long as any man who travels the streets after dark is liable at any moment to be held up and robbed, and perhaps badly wounded by the footpads who operate unmolested in Portland.
