NAVY (United Press Leased Wire.) i London, Nor. IS. A protest against j i the Inclusion of the United States in the policy of Great Britain for the enlarge ' ment of her navy to exceed those of any two powers is addressed to the public by the Nation. . The Nation declares that America and - Germany are the next two powers in comparative naval strength. America, ,: however, ' has practically to build two navies, owing to her doubla coast line. Referring to Great Britain, the article says: ''A people of 40.000,000 is called upon to provide a force stronger than that . levied on 140.000,000. Great Britain can not do it, and the Liberal party will not try to do It. They will never eon- , sent to build against America; It Is j hateful to the Liberals even to think of building against the United; States," CANNOT GIVE J0BS , TO SECURE VOTES Salem, Or., Nor. 28. Although many, v If not all the candidates for president of the senate or speaker of the house may not te aware or me race, yet tneir ' campaigns for election coma within the . regulations of the corrupt practices act adopted by the people last June. & Section 10 of the act specifically pro p vldes that the term "public office" Bhall apply to the presiding office of either branch of the legislature. Such candi dates would not, however, be bound by section 8 of the act limiting camnalirn expenditures,, for that section applies only to a candidate "who has received the nomination to a public office." But tney are apparently subject to the pro- visions of section 19 of the aot whifch forbids, directly or indirectly promises of appointment to any position of honor. trust or emolument. AND ! WOMAN'S WORK OREGON HOTELS LYDIA E. NKHAM Nature and a woman's work com- bined have produced the grandest remedy for woman's ills that th world has ever known. In the firood old-fashioned days of our grandmothers they relied upor. the roots and herbs of the field tc cure disease and mitigate suffering. The Indians on our Westerr: Plains to-day can produce roots and herbs for every ailment, and cure diseases that baffle the most skilled physicians who have spent years bo the study of drugs. From the roots and herbs of the field Lydia R Pinkham more than thirty years ago gave to the women of the world a remedy lor tneir pe culiar ills, more potent and effica cious than any combination of drug s. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is now recognized as the standard remedy for woman's ills. Mrs. Bertha Muff, of 615 N.G St Louisiana, Mo., writes : " Complete restoration to health means so much to me that for the sake of other suffering- women I am willing to make my troubles public. "For twelve years 1 bad been suffer ing' with the worst forms of female ills. During that time I had eleven different physicians without help. No tongue can tell what I suffered, and at times 1 could hardly walk. About two years aeo I wrote Mrs, Pinkham for advice. I followed it, and can truly say that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com pound and Mrs. Pinkham's advice re stored health and strength. It ia worth mountains of fold to suffering women." ' What Lydia E. Pinkham's Vege table Compound did for Mrs. Muff, It will do for other suffering women. TWO RUNAWAY BOYS IN ONE FAMILY . fITnltoa Ptms WIm.1 Los Angeles, Cal., Nor. 28. "No help wanted," is the sign hung out over the Panama Canal sone today. The reason for this, as explained by the government authorities, la that the work on the "big ditch" hag passed its high est point, so far as the employment of men is concerned. The present tendency ia-uui iu euiijiuj mure mn out to reauco the force, and this applies alike to clerical, artisan and labor classes. From this time forward the work In the Canal sone will be confined largely to actual canal building, includ ing excavating and '4am and lock con struction. Building and municipal work, erecting houses, installing watr and sewer systems and road making have reached the stage where most of the expenditure from this time forth will be for maintenance. On this account the forces formerly engaged In munlclnal ensineertnv an building have been reduced, and In con sequence, the services of a number of clerks, engineers, carpenters, plumbers and other artisans have been dispensed with. Wherever possible the men whose services are not needed In one division of the work are emnlnviul nn another and this system of transferring memours oi me present rorce also re duces the number of positions open to new men.
