. THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. : PORTLAND. SATURDAY , EVENING, NOVEMBER 28,. 1803. 11 TWO VALUABLE ; : CARGOES CLEARED Steamer Arabia Leaves for Japan and China Witlr Flour. ' FRENCH SHIP GOES . TO EUROPEAN PORTS Manifest of the Marechael de Nolal leg Shows Vessel Will Carry $106, 000 Worth of Wheat to Europe Oriental Cargo Worth $200,000. With the clearing1 through the cus toms housa today of ths German steamer Arabia of the Portland & Asiatic line, for Hongkong and way points, and the French ship Marechael do Nolalles for Queenstown or Falmouth for orders, over 1300,000 worth of home products were get afloat for foreign markets. The Arabia j left down from Albina dock at noon 'today carrying: a cargo valued at $201,678 and the ship Marechael de Nolalles Is expected to leave down this afternoon with a cargo of wheat, valued at $106,995. The lion s share of the, Arabia consists of flour, there being 48,018 barrels In the hold, the value of which Is $182,075. The remainder of the cargo consists of general merchandise and about 160.000 feet of lumber to the aggregate value Of 19603. The flour will be distributed at a , number of ports In Japan and China, but a large quantity Is booked for Hongkong. The liner Alesla which left here during the early part of the week goes to Vladivostok' with every pound of flour on board so that the Chinese and Japanese purchases are not in creased by the two liners In such close succession. The Numantia. will be the next oriental liner to arrive here. She Is scheduled to. arrive here about a week before Christmas. The French ship Marechal' de Nolalles will In all probability close the foreign wheat shipments for the month of No vember since none of the other grain carriers at the docks is near being finished. The British steamer TTganda which arrived here during the week to carry wheat to Europe Is about ready to begin loading but even at the best it would now bv almost impossible to get her away before December 1. TOO CHATTY COP GIVEN DISMISSAL The supposedly inherent right of all policemen from time Immemorial to lapse Into an occasional state of lethargy has been frowned upon by T. G Greene, chairman of the police committee. Ha tried two patrolmen Wuiniulav Avenlnar and vefiterdav an nounced that .both were guilty of neglect of duty. Henry Hols, who pa- i trols the Sellwood. district., found it rather expensive to disappear within a building for an undue length of time, especially as he waa being watched by two police sergeants. If he took "40 winks" while Inside each wink cost him half a dollar, for he was fined 820. URGES MOTHERS TO INFLUENCE S0XS At the meeting of the Woman's club yesterday afternoon Rabbi Jonah B. Wise spoke on "Good Citizenship," urg ing upon the members of the club the opportunities for furthering good con ditions near at hand. Among the du ties which might be undertsken by such a club he suggested the founding of a hospital for tubercular patients in the city or near by, the establishment of a city hospital for emergency cases, a more united effort throughout all the state for waging war against tubercu losis and the improvement of conditions f the Kfillev Butte rockpile. He also urged upon the mothers the necessity for training their Bons to be good cttT xens, emphasizing tne motners lnnu ence upon the rising generation. A strong plea for milk inspection and for an Inspection bureau, to prevent the selling of milk from tubercular cows, was made by Dr. W. I. Cottel, who asked the support of the club for the measure which he recently Introduced before the city council asking for milk Inspection for the city. Mrs. George Howard Pettlnger was in charge of the program. The presi dent, Mrs. Robert Lutke, presided and was given suthorlty to appoint commit tees on pure fond and sanitation, which she will do. W.' A. Montgomery sang a group of patriotic songs, with Mrs. Mark Gill as accompanist. ATTORNEYS SAY GAMBLING ALL ALIKE The Portland Railway, Light & Power company was directed by the city ex ecutive board last night to proceed at once with the improvement of East First street. ' On motion of T. G. Greene the con tract for the paving of Cleveland ave nue was also let, despite a protest from Attorney Flagler for the Quackenbush company. A communication from Attorneys Wil bur & Spencer protesting against the raids by the police on Chinese gambling dens was laid upon the table. The law yers declared in their letter that the Chinese should not be molested any more than white men who play for BIRTHS LUKAZEWSKI -To Mr. and Mrs. A.
