THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL', PORTLAND, FRIDAY EVENING. NOVEMBER 27. 1908. STEALS STYLES, MAKES FORTUtlE Woman Poses J as Wealthy Customer and Draws ; Latest Designs, Roma; Nov. 17. Mile. Julia Barber inl'a method of making her. fortune Is not recommended to those possessed of strong scruples, but tt Is none the less orfelnal and worthy of being told. It is. of course, In" Paris that '-'la mode" is created, and the dressmakers and .tailors of other countries pur chase their models from there, j But Mile, Barbarlnl found a better way and for many years she realized good prof" Its by presenting to the chief dress makers of .this and other large towns, in Italy the newest and most exclusive fashions which she procured In Paris by a most ingenious and delicate method. Tlswed JTsw Tsihlons. At the commencement of the season, as soon as the new fashions were out, two people would present themselves in the show-room of one of the largest "magaslns"-' of Paris.; The attendants hastened to wait on a richly dressed young woman, dark, slender and ele gant, accompanied by an old gentle man. . . , The young woman threw herself into a chair and grumbled with a strange foreign accent of the tyranny of fash ions to which she had to submit, and of the bother of buying new frocks, and hardly paid much attention to the "mannequins". who paraded before her with the latest in walking, evening and ball dresses of all sorts. Presently her interest seemed to awaken a little and she drew a little gold pencil and some ivory tablets, on which to write The parade went on and a second as sistant was called to help this hard-to-please woman to make up her mind, and bo It went on for nearly four hours uih til the couple departed saying they would send In their orders later. Upon a recent occasion the two as sistants who attended to the couple were nearly exhausted when a chance movement gave one pf them an Inspira tion. She happened to look In one of the big glasses at the back of the dis satisfied customer and there saw that she was not writing down her orders, but warf drawing, with facile pen, de signs of the latest fashions which were being paraded before her. " "We have something still better in madame will follow me." The old gen tleman was asked to remain where he was. and the assistant conducted her customer to a small fitting room, where she closed and double-locked the door upon her. Then she returned to the old gentleman and told him his compan ion was a prisoner and would remain so until she gave up her tablets upon which she had been making her dH "ve minutes after, they both left the shop to recommence at some other, no doubt, but leaving behind them the lady's labors of the past four hours. Take any lard-fried food and examine it when it is cold. You will find it covered with a thicks heavy coat of grease that you would not think of eating under any circumstances. That grease is there just the same when the food is warm, -but you do not see it It is the fpfe-runner of indigestion, unless you have the stomach of an ostrich. Cottohne contains no hog fat, and food cooked with it is not only wholesome and digestible, but healthful and absolutely free from hog fat. The reason -is that Cottohne is a vegetable oil product, and not an animal fat. IT. For the sec ond time in the progress of the graft trials of former Boss Abraham Ruef on a charge of attempting to bribe Super visor John J. Furey for his vote on the passage of a trolley ordinance, the cur tain veiling Ruefs absolute dominance of the supervisorial board was drawn today. Andrew M. Wilson, a former super Visor, later a Ruef " railroad commission er, told the story of the lnnor workings of the graft machine, on the -witness stand under the questions of the volun teer assistants of District Attorney Langdon and in spite of the objections of Henry Ach. Ruefs counsel. Wilson, once Indicted after being promised immunity because his testi monv In the trial of Tirey I Ford, chief counsel, for the united Railroads, was unsatisfactory, today controverted the claim of Ruef that not himself,. but "Big Jim" Gallagher, his lieutenant and go between, was the master of the boodling board. Wilson recounted a conversation with Ruef, in which the fallen boss, then at the height of-his power, told' him, he as serted, that should Big Jim attain the coveted place of superior judge he, Ruef, desired Wilson to succeed to the vacant place of lieutenant WUson said that he declined Ruefs offer. On the night of Ruefs selsure of the office of district attorney and the sub sequent ousting of Francis J. Heney from the position of assistant district attorney. Ruef consulted with Henry Ach 'and Gallagher. After the. move had ben decided upon, Charles- Heg garty. Ruefs office boy, was sent with a message notifying Heney of , his re moval. Wilson said: Henev's reply, according to Hur- garty, was: "Tell Ruef to go to hell..i .
