THE OREGON DAILY- JOURNAL. PORTLAND. TUESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER , 24,' 1908. 17 DEEPER GROWS THE 61 PUZZLE la Grande Jail Apparently , 'Holds Wrong Men in : : Shooting Scrape. ' (Special PlsDStcb U The Journal. i La Grande, Or., Nov. 24. Flem Gab bart and Ben. Curtlss are spending the day in the city jail on an informal charge of ' shooting and attempting to rob Charles Anderson in this city early Sunday morning. At 2 o'clock today no formal charge or complaint had .'tieen filed against them. It is evident that an attempt was made to rob Anderson, and soma one shot him. ' He is nursing a very sore chin 'and a crippled hand as a result According to Anderson's story two men, dressed in Cowboy at tire, pointed a revolver at him and or dered him to give them some whiskey. This he refuse . to do and then the highwaymen demanded his money, This request was also denied and the rob bers fired a couple of shots. One shot struck him in the chin and the other plowed its way through ' his hand. As the description of the would r robbers tallied rather closely with that of Gabbart and Curtlss, the officers felt justified in taking them Into custody. The accused men were at the' city jail and both stoutly denied any complicity "or knowledge of the affair. They claim that they will be able to establish their Innocence. They do not deny having been In town at the time of the holdup. In fact,, they say they will be-able to account for all of their time from the hour they came to the. city to the time the officers arrested them in the room over the La Grande restaurant. The assault is said to have taken place 20 mlnutei after midnight and at this time the men charged claim they were eat ing lunch, in the above mentioned place. The ooys were both dressed after the manner of oowpunchers and Anderson claims that the men who held him up were dressed In a similar style. 'This seems to be about the only circum stance which In any way connects the prisoners with the oharge. As the crime was committed early Sunday morning and no official complaint has been filed. It would seem that Anderson himself does not feel overly certain that the right men have been arrested. BEST SHOOTING BAVY EVER DID American Gunners Able to Smother the Biggest fighter Alfoat. By H. Les Clotworthy, Staff Corre spondent of the Unlttd Press. Manila, P. L, Nov. 24. Experts stated today that no ship now afloat could remain five minutes under the terrific firing shown by the American gunners In the battle practice here to day. The shooting Is unequaled and Is the best ever done by the navy. Much satisfaction is being expressed by the officers and the general results of the practice are a source of gratification to all ooncerned. ' , The people here attribute the order al lowing the men of the fleet shore leave from Thursday to Sunday to President elect Taft. It is understood that when the appeals were made to the govern ment, messages were also sent to Taft asking him to Intercede in behalf of Manila and explaining that the future of the city was being endangered by the action of Rear Admiral Sperry.
