Grants Pass, On, Nov., 11. -All of the material for the new steel bridge across Rogue river In Uils city Is now on hand, and work of construction will begin at once. The construction company hopes to have the new structure reaoy ror traffic early In -1909. The bridge .will have a width of 25 feet, and will be constructed to accommodate both wagons and cars. 1 . The Josephine County Irrigation Power company, the organization of which was perfected two weeks ago, and which is composed entirely of local men, has elected its officers and will at once proceed with the work of estab lishing an irrigating .system for Grants Pass and surrounding district. The of ficers elected are: President, H. I Oilkey; vice-president, G. H. Carner; secretary, J, C, Rlggs; treasurer, G. A. Hamilton. The Almeda Consolidated Mines com pany, which haa developed extensive copper-gold mines on Rogue river, be low Grants Pass, and which is now in stalling a 100-ton smelter, haa also be gun the placing of a huge power dam, This idam will be similar to that con structed at Gold Bay by the Rogue River Electric company, and will de velop about 8.000 horsepower. The pow er will be used to operate the mines of the Almeda company, and will also be distributed by electric wire to the sur rounding mines and districts. The Grants pass council ha passed an ordinance making It a misdemeanor for boys to "steal rides", on automobiles, hacks, trucks or delivery wagona Sev eral boya have been badly crippled by catching onto moving automobiles and wagona and these accidents have re sulted in this ordinance. The depot will probably be located at Eu gene, on account of its central position. WHITE SALMON'S EXHIBIT 100 Boxes of Fertile Valley's Fruit to Spokane. (special pupates to ana Jonrnal.) Husum, Wash., Nov. 11. The frutt products of the White Salmon valley will be well represented at the national apple show to be held In Sookana De cember 7-12. As many as 100 boxes of apples will ne selected rrom the or chards throughout the valley and placed on exhibition. Suitable space has been secured. The apples that will pre dominate in the makeup of the differ ent varieties will be the Spftienberg. Yellow Newton Pippin, Wlnesap and Baldwin. J. R. McCraken will fur nish 40 boxes alone from his famous orchard, near Husum. This will be a rare opportunity to show to the world the present and future Industry of this valley. Just coming Into . prominence as one of the most successful fruit growing sections on the coast. The white Salmon Commercial club will have charge of the exhibit. Arrana-e- rnents have been completed for a-- big booster meeting at White Salmon No vember 14. The enthuslaatlo citizens throughout thervalley from Trout lake to the Columbia river have announced their Intention of befng present and assisting in the productiveness and thrift of the western portion of Klick itat county. - The meeting will be for the purpose of devising ways and means of advertising this section of the county. Tom Richardson, manager of the Commercial club of Portland, and H. M. Adama, general freight and pas senger ag-ent of the Portland, Seattle & Spokane railroad, will be present and make addresses showing the benefits of community advertising. OFFICERS SCOUR COUNTY No Trace of Robert Miles, the Cattle Thief. (Rperial niapatrb to Th Innrnal.t North Yakima, Wash., Nov. 10. Yak ima county officers are looking for Robert Miles, the cattle thief, who broke Jail at Goldendale in Klickitat county Sunday. After getting out of Jail he secured a horse and a rifle and started for the Yakima Indian reservation. Miles and a boy named Harlan were ar rested while driving a bunch of Klick itat county cattle toward North Yaki ma. At first they said they had been hired to drive them, but later Miles confessed, but exon orated his compan ion. ' REPAIR FIRES' DAMAGES Welser National Forests Will Re Re seeded With Fir, (Special Diapatch to n Journal.) Welser. Idaho, 'Nov, 10. Supervisor X B. Lafferty of the Welser national for est, has received from the forestry de partment at Washington, D.' C. a large shipment of fir tree seed that will be planted ror experimental purposes on the reserve. - Mr. Lafferty stated that the seed would be sown at two different times. The first planting will take Flace immediately, and will be care ullr harrowed into the ground, while later on the second lor. will do sown on too of the snow and be left to work its wav into the earth. Because of the fact that forest fires on the welser national forest destroyed considerable vaiuaDle timber and young rrowths of trees this land -will be re seeded and an effort made .to have the same species started again. At the present time the forest rangers will be employed in matting ineae experiments and prpartng their stations for the win ter, which will soon set in and prevent any further efforts along this line of work. YAKIMA VALLEY'S FUTURE. Country Is Rich in Opportunities for Investors. (Special Diapatch to Tba Journal) North Yakima, Wash Nov. 11. The productiveness of central Washington will be increased four-fold when the Ir rigation projects now in mind are com- leted. This is the statement of E. H. itbby, one of the pioneers of this val ley, who left here in 1898 and opened the country around Clarkston. Mr. Llbby has been in this section for sev eral days, and has made a tour of in spection to White Bluffs and other points on the Columbia river, in the territory that is Just being opened by the North Coast Mr. Llbby would not say what was the special object of his visit, but it is believed that he is back of some big projects. He says that that section offers some wonderful opportu nities for energetic young men. GAMBLING RESORTS CLOSE Reform Forces at Lewlston Win First Victory. (Rpeclal Diapatch. to The Journal.) Lewiston, Ida., Nov. ll.r-The first results of the strenuous election cam paign conducted in Lewlston for the closing of the Saloons Is found in the closiner of the open gambling. In the fiifht for a "wet" town the saloon forces won. but only after an alliance with elements that forced concessions from them. The first of these to ma- terallze is the closing of open gam bling. Last night the resorts that wero running wide open closed voluntarily. Other reform movements are said to be slated. CURRY COAL STRIKE Three-Foot Vein Is Discovered Near Wedderburn. (Special Diapatch to The Journal.) pold Beach, Or., Nov. 11. A three fobt vein of coal of good quality has recently been discovered on the Hume ranch five miles from Wedderburn. Mr. Hume will put a force of men at work at onco to develop the property, and If found in sufficient quantity will ship from Wedderburn.
