By this means the expense of an interpreter was saved, and tt was learned that Barbara Fault' ner was married to John a Paukner in Austria In 4881. Mrs. Paukner is well advanced In years and told a pathetic story of abuse by her husband. She said he drank a great deal, and several times broke the furniture , and the dishes. Mertln goes to the peni tentiary, a 1 li expected he will, he may there be taught bya older men some of the rudiments of the burglar's trade. It Is believed by the detec tives that he has taken only a corres pondence school course In the art At any rate he ran Into the arms of a olicemen who didn't know he was a urglar, and to this misfortune owes him present plight. At I o'clock this morning Patrolman wade heard a noise in the saloon of Herman Brelter, at Mississippi avenue and Russell street. He was not sure whether it was a burglar at work or a porter scrubbing out the place. To make sure he. kicked violently on the door. "What are you making so much noise forf: he demanded. There was a scurry of feet across the floor, and Wade, feeling sure that a burglar was Inside, ran to a window - around the corner. Just as- a man's head showed Itself at the window and the1 owner of the head prepared to climb out to free dom, wade flashed i his electric lan tern; full In Mertln's face. The burglar had a smalt saw in-his pocket with which he had been trying to make a hole through a door and thus reach the desirable portion of the saloon. Detectives are today trying to con nect Mertin. a stocky, bloude Oeraan aged ,.17. years, with the robbery f two .or - three other saloons recently, especially that of Jacob Kober, at Third and Pavts strets, where 85 and some stamps were obtained. One of the odd features of the ease Is that fate seems to be determined to even up matters between the po lice and Brelter, for the saloon man was arrested and paid a- fine of 823 yesterday for keeping his saloon Open on election day.
