' That girls of lTyears with no experi ence whatever In nursing had" under their care day and night patients who had just passed through surgical opera tions of a serious nature was a part of the amazing testimony deduced at the Inquest held on the body of Misa Pearl Lamb of Deadwood, Or., yesterday afternoon. The girl nurses were em- nlnvurt at the "sanitarium" Of the Drs. Atwood at Tremont, where Miss Lamb died, ss is alleged, as tne result or a criminal oneratlon. The Atwoods. father and son. who have already been bound over to appear before the grand 1ury on a charge of maintaining a public nuisance, were exonerated from responsibility for the Ueath Of MISS Lamo, an tney proauceo a altfnBA atitrrapnl marie bv her In which she declared that an operation of a criminal nature n(l Deen periormea hy"S' physician In Eugene before she asked the Atwoods to treat her. ""Were you told to give her water or not to do sor aoked the coroner. "No. slr." replied the witness. Two'girls who had been employed In the sanitarium for a short time were put on the witness etand, and their re plies to questions asked them showed very clearly the absence of ordinary precautions as to the care of patients, especially those who had Just passed through operations, as had Miss Lamb when she "kept the nurse running for water all the Mme." Within the past two months the coro ner has held two inquests In which the Atwoods were deeply concerned, but In both Instances the doctors escaped being held responsible by producing statements signed by the dying patient nr a member nf the famllv which de clared the original operation to have been performed by another physician. Both Dr. r. H. T. At wood, the father, and Dr. C. H. At wood, the son, as well a a fr a " R Ratnok. who had been called ' in when Miss Lamb suddenly grew worse, testified at the inquest yes terday. The testimony given by the three doctors differed widely from that of Dr. N. W. Jones, who had examined the body for the coroner, especially as to the Injury which had resulted In deatlv m m Miss Oorg. the nurse who attended Miss Lamb,' testified that she had worked eight days in the sanitarium, having left the cannery the week before. Aa she said. Dr. Atwood "gave her a Job in his sanitarium." Though she first de clared she had nothing to do with the patients but make the beds and carry them food and water, further question ing revealed the fact that this Experi enced working girl was the only attend ant at the sanitarium; that although she went to Dea at o ciock sne was on duty day and night, the patients ringing a Dell If they needed her. ... Agnes Oppel, aged 17 years, living at Tremont with her parents, had worked In the' sanitarium three weeks. Her mother had taken her away after ths recent investigation or tne pice uwau. Miss Opoel, who looks younger than 17. astonished the Jury by saying that she had been -present at all operations Serformed during her stay In the sani irlum. Perhaps the most astonishing of all the testimony was the statement of the nrir. irlrl . whn aaiA that Miss Lamb. who haf been under chloroform during the operation performed October S, the day after she arrived at the sanitarium, was left to lie on her bed unattended until she tecovered consciousness and was able to ring the bell. The nurse declared that she did not then know that any operation had been performed. The younger Atwood admitted on the iinrf 1 that a number of signed state- monta almllar to that made -v Miss Lambrwho first called "herself Gladys Johnson, naa risen received ana nepi in thelr-LoUlce.
