Even tlie demand from the south has de creased, and while the markets there are openly quoting; practically the same old figures of last week. It la a notice able fact that they are not renins; the ' prices. Several shipments from here to fcan KranoUro recently find a. lack of buyers because of the enormous offer ln of their local river stock, which Is stated by all to te im otn qu.1117 mv 1 river districts of California have turned xni for mftnv a vear. Then, too, the crop along the rivers Is heavy, although other aeciiops or tuurw short yield. ,' Srinrlar Blears Into Portland. ' The recent arrival here of a carload , Miiiinu fmm California really meant more than the mere receipt of the car. To the trade it meant the be ginning of regular shipment from the , south wltn tneir lower pricea. uuio ur eal producers brought In sufficient sup nllpn ! a reasonable price to fill the wants of the trade. It Is exceedingly hard even at this time to secure any great- quantity of potatoes In eastern Iultnomah or eastern Clackamas under f 1, and this price' buyers consider ex 1'Mnlvt and will not pay It. On the other hand, producers are of the opln " Ion that potatoes will go higher which they will likely do late in the. spring because of the great shortage in the .- east - i.-. . Mistaken as .efrarde. Colorado Crop. - That Colorado has a larger crop of . potatoes than a year ago seems cer oain from present reports. Early stl- ma tea were that Colorado would turn " out a small crop this season, but the . latest Information is showing just the ireverse. The Greeley , (Colo.) corre- mondent of the Denver Record states that according to the statements 'Professor K. K. Bennett, potato expert of the State Agricultural college, Colo rado will have a bumper crop of pota- toes this year. An estimate or tne out nut of the district for this , year rather difficult to make, but Judging " from the past it is safe to predict that ,lt will not be far from 10,000 to JJ.000 - f ..care. - 1 . . While the increase at Greeley Is con - .elderable. the large increase of the Colo irado croo over previous years will come jirora the mountain districts of the state. Reports from the Roaring Pork 'and Grand valleys, the Uncompaahgre and the Han Luis indicate a very marked Increase. Last year the Denver & Rio . Grande Railroad eompany shipped from these valleys a total of 1,800 cars of ' potatoes. This year they are planning to handle 4.500 cars, or more tnan twice as many as any previous year., 1 1 Short Crop Elsewhere. Referring to the above, the corre spondent says that the Increase In pro - : ductlon of potatoes in Colorado need not Triahten the erowers into selling st low orice. Within the past few days the Colorado experiment station has re ceived letters from Maine, Connecticut, Mew York. Pennsylvania. Ohio. Michl- s;an. Wisconsin, Minnesota," Iowa, Indi ana,. Illinois and Oregon concerning the : potato crop in these states., All of them except Maine and Minnesota show a marked shortage In crop, owing to ad verse weather conditions. Soma of these report as low as 60 Mr cent of a crop, and several of them only from 60 to 70 per cent of a crop. When we consider that these states in a normal year pro dues 195,000,000 bushels, we see the shortage in the United States is far more than Colorado may hope to pro duce tor many years to come. Improvement la Chickens. There Is somewhat of an Improve ment In the'tone of the local; chicken market. Supplies are not nearly so lib eral, and the smaller buyers have been forced to pay an advance of from c to 1c a pound over the iow quotations of last week. At the new prices the market will not stand very heavy ar rivals, and a return of last week's heavy 'shipments would simply .cause another break in values. - Eggs are holding firm, with practi cally all -sales of local fresh at this time around ST He. There was a weaker tone In the cash wheat market here' today, owing to the indifference of foreigners to take hold of supplies. While no change is noted In cash or future wheat values, the for mer market may safely be considered lc lower, because buyers are not disposed to purchase at the higher figures, which, however, are still being quoted. There was a further showing.- of strength in the barley market In the south today, but locally the situation is showing no change from yesterday, when values advanced. While the top of the market la standing at SS.SO. the general run of good stuff will scarcely bring more than It.lu at this time. At the lower price It Is believed that the move ment of boas will be aulte rood, for this Is the first time that killers have been able to buy hogs at these figures ror some time and they are likely to take advantae-a of the situation bv In. vesting. The total run of hogs In the yards during the 24 hours reached 900 bead compared with 460 yesterday and 636 for. this same day a year ago. While the eastern market Is showing no change for the 'day the former decline there was much more severe than here and our prices even now after the decline of today are above those ruling else where. Cattle Weakea Suddenly. Owing- to the heavy shipments that killers are bringing In from the moun tain ranges there is a sndden change of sentiment regarding cattle values. While best steers are still quoted as high as $4.26 the general run will not bring that- figure. Sheep market shows a continuation of the very, small run. and while oackers are bringing in some of their contracted stuff the market stands In a very good position, although prices are showing no change for the day. It is Safe to say. thouah. that Baker will not ad vertise this sudden growth for the new Inhabitants are of the class declared undesirable In Portland. What the loadstone is no one will say. but it Is a fact that the- -eastern Oregon town is attracting the greater part of the women who have found It necessary to leave the Rose City. Mrs. Lola G. Baldwin says that more, than half the north end denizens have left the city. The other half Is 'com fortably ensconced In various quarters of town and are continuing to make a living as usual. About the only friends they have since the banishment edict, became effective are the faithful "ad-3 vertlslng agents" who were with them In prosperity and who now In self-defense continue to solicit for them in their new places of business. The card system prevails and the women find It an easy matter to continue at the old trade, the only dlfferenca being that wine and song at least song has been eliminated. The orofitabla dnllar-bnar sideline has also been destroyed.. Mrs. Baldwin, who haa twrnn Ahtna her best to help the exiles, says that It Is Impossible for a woman to reform' In, Portland. As an example she gives the experience of one girl who came to her and asked for' help. Mrs. Baldwin ob-, tained a position for the . girl as a waitress in a boarding-house. Before ' the evening of the first day the boarding-house proprietress was called to one side by a man who told her of the for mer occupation of her new etnploye. The woman was very indienant. Their oath Is entered In the court records but whether they will draw down this money while they are at the same time paid a salary from the city remains for the county commissioners to decide. .- The matter of city officers and de tectives accepting witness fees waa taken up some time ago and- it waa understood that as it waa Dart of tha duty of the man who arrested a man charged with a crime to testify against him the ' detectives should not re ceive witness fees. However, the under standing did not last long and th names of many detectives may be seen on th court records as having turned in olatma for witness fees during tha last few . months.
