of the Island Navigation company, en
route from Belllngham and due hera
this morning at 8 o'clock, caught fir
off Apple Tree Cove at 4 o'clock this
morning and In order to save th lives
of hla passengers and the steamer Cap
tain Hansen beached her.
The fire started In the galley and the
flames, eating the dry woodwork, spread
so fast that passengers sitting near the
galley barely escaped with their lives.
The fir alarm waa sounded and the
crew, assisted by th passengers who
hastily scrambled out nf the berths,
soon got the flames under control. A
high wind-was blowing at th time and
Captain Hansen ran ashore under a lee
After the fire was put out the ateamer
limped Into this port. The damage is
estimated at 110.000.

Charles Maekay, a West Indian, has
deserted the British ship Aberfoyle be

Seamen's Friend Society Gives Pleas
ing Tuesday Evening Program.
The first Tuesday evening concert of
the season at the Portland Seaman's
Friend society was given last night by
Ml.s Delia Bradley, and if all the sea
son's concerts are of as hl;rh order as
the one last evening the sailors coming
here this winter are to be well enter
tained.
Taking part In the concert were: Miss
W'atkins, Miss Josie Stipa, Miss Brad
ley, Miss Eugena Craig, the Mlssns
Hlosser. Miss Johnson, and last but not
least Edward Dempsey of the Leyland
brothers, leading the chanties in the
hoisting of the topsail. Every number
cefved by the seamen present.

First Load to Swift Plant.
Work on the construction of the
foundation for the immense Swift pack
ing plant on the peninsula has practi
cally begun in that the first bargeload
of grave for the concrete was deliv
ered there yesterday by the steamer
Poloma of the Columbia Digger com
pany. The Columbia Digger company has
the contract for furnishing a large
quantity of gravel that will be re-
?ulred In the laying of the foundations
or the numerous buildings that are to
form tho packing establishment and
bargeload- after bargeload will be sent
there as requirements demand.

There is said to be some probability
