BAKER COUNTY'S -FAIR AND RACE MEET NEXT WEEK summer by, the United States govern roent through the. forest service, Curry county and the lower Rogue river coup try la enjoying the moat rapid, devel opment in that section's history. New mining districts ara being opened, lm portant mineral ' discoveries made, new towns laid out new dairying and farm Ing districts settled and new gold pro ducers added to the list of placer mines. In former years northern Curry county and an tne vast region 01 tne lower Rogue has been isolated, shut out from the main world by mountain barriers. The government, at an ex pense of many thousand dollars, has constructed a seven-ioot irau ouwn river from Gallce to Gold Beach. Be sides the trail, the government through the forest service. Is also constructing a telephone line down the -river. This lino will touch all tha mining camps and settlements for a distance of 60 miles below Gallce, and extends all the way from Grants Pass to Gold Beach. Thou eh both the trail and the tele phone lines were constructed primarily ror tne use or tne roresi service, mey will be used also by tbe. general public. The forest service, through Superin tendent Anderson, maintains a large construction crew on the trail. The work has been tedious and expensive, aa a great portion of the new highway was blasted out of solid rock. A cable sus pension bridge was hung across the river about ten miles below Callce. This structure Is of 180-foot span and Is hung by a heavy steel cable. It Is seven feet wide and will support pack trains as well as men. The construction crew 1" now at work on a difficult section of trail a few miles below this bridge. When tHls Is cut through the remainder of the route will be easy, and the new road will Boon be opened all the way to Gold Beach. The old trail out of Curry, over which the mall has been carried by way of Mule creek and West Fork, will be abandoned, anr the mall carried over the new and shorter route. The steepest portion-of the new trail Is less than 10 per cent., and It reaches a much lower altitude than the old trail. With this arenerous boost from the na tional government the mining camps and settlements or tne lower koruo river country will come rapidly to the front. New quartz mines are being opened up on lower Illinois river and at Almeda. Several, very promising copper el Pl addreaa of tba evening, reviewing - '".J a.
