It was enacted that the residential
electors should be chosen on the first
Wednesday In January Instead of the
first Tuesday after the first Monday
in November, a .now obtain. It was
provided that the electors should meet
and cast their votes for president and
vice-president on the first Wednesday
In February and that the new congrea
should assemble on th first Wednes
day ln March. The fact that this latter
date 4iappened to fall on March fixed the
data which was subsequently chosen as

Ashland, Ot, Oct. 10. The Salways,
the last of the Ashland peach crop, are
being marketed this week and the c!os4
of next week will practically clean up
all the Ashland peaches for shipment
The last carload sent put was sold in
San Francisco and brought $1 a box.
Another car will be shipped by the
Ashland Fruit association on Monday
to the San Francisco market.
The peach crop of Ashland has been
heavy this year, but the prices have
been below the average of previous
years and srrowers have been disap
pointed in the markets. A great many
peaches vhave been sold as low as 1
cents cer Douna. ursi-eiass assuriun
stock, but as the season is closlnx
Drlces are a little better and small lot
are now going at 2 cents per pound
The .Portland market, wnicn nas nere
tofore been the principal one for Ash
land Deaches. has apparently been
glutted during most of the peach sea

There was a firmer tone in the local
grain market today and while cash stuff
shows no change for the day there was

The oats market If at a standstill
for the cash stuff. Nothing over $30
Is helns offered for No. 1 white for
spot delivery. Buyers and sellers are
playlnir a waiting game and the total
transactions in this market are very
light. On the board of trade today

farmers have their crops all
safe now and most of It around
here Is In warehouses. Much
has also been shipped. Whit
man county has the record thl
year for the largest yield
wheat ln the state, the crop
having totalled 7,600,000 bush
els. The average yield per acre
throughout the state was a lit
tle over 19 bushels. The total
wheat yield for the state Is
29,700,000 bushels; oats, 7,850,
000. Columbia county Is re
ported to have had the largest
yield per acre, 25 bushels," while
Benton county gets the booby
prize of 3 bushels per acre. It
is estimated the wheat crop of
Whitman county alone will
bring the farmers- $6,000,000.
The price of whoat has ranged
from 71 to 80 cents. Through
out the Palouso country the
farmers are ln need of rain,
but nearer here the need ,.of rain
is not felt so much.

Nolan, proprietor of the Maple Leaf sa-
, loon, $45. He signed the name of a
relative to these checks, which were
drawn on the Vancouver National bank
and made payable to himself. ,.. .
He made out three more check for
$100. $75 and $60 and left them at Nc-
lan's saloon, with the evident Intention
of drawing the money later. .
Those from whom Bennett secured
money have been reimbursed and have
agreed not to prosecute him, following
his promise to - restrain . from . such
things in the future..

ren street paving contract and decided
to defer formal acceptance of It until
several places were repaired.
The council considered that all such
places should be patched and the pave
ment finished in every detail before it
