Coming her from Ban Francisco the
British steamer Knight of tha Thistle
ran cloaa to a whistling buoy In tha
vlolnlty of Cap Mendocino, about t
miles off shore. Tha buoy was working
wall and sending out warnings In all
directions.
Luckily the sound waa heard about
noon In clear weather. Had ita aonor-
oua shrieks reached the ears of the
iv mon 01 & dik irimn in ina nam
of nlsht It mlaht have caused no little
alarm Decause no on on Doara pad, an
Idea of there Ming neceaaity ror a
whlatllna- buoy In the vicinity In which
they were aupposlng themselves to be
at the time.
Captain Baker ran within a mile and
a half of tha bouy but knew from Ita
; position that It was adrift and that the
steamer was safe on Its course and
about 10 miles off shore. Me reported
tha Incident this morning to John. Vc-
Nulty. nautical expert in charge of ana
branch hydrographlo office, who In turn
L win report me runaway wmsuing puoy
to tha department at Washington.. A
boat will possibly be dispatched to
search for It.
Captain Baker says it was a red
fainted buoy end thia leads to tho be
ief that it Is possibly the buoy that
soma weeks ago went adrift from the
entrance to the Columwa river during a
hard blow. Another buoy was placed In
its position to warn mariners of their
close proximity to shore.
The drifting buoy is no particular
menace slnoe It never falls to "make
known Its position to approaching
mariners, but It might cause them
worry should they hear tha sound at
night and fall to discover Ita origin.
