When Mr. Bryan was here he addressed
more than 40.000 working men, besides
hundreds of business men, and reviewed

'Furthormore. Judare Taft did not re

Another report which was brought to
headquarters waa from Cincinnati,
Judge Taft's home. Of the Bryan meet
ing there September 24. The report hag
been substantiated by the Cincinnati
Knqulrer. which is not supporting
Bryan. The report referred to and the
Enoulrer agree that Cincinnati never

people who jammed ths streets
he nominee. l no thre nans,
the famous old Music hall,
only a small portion of the
mmense masses were snoken

ovation.
Josephus Daniels, member of the na
tional committee, said to me:
''Never have I witnessed such an ova-
on. It was heartfelt, too, and was the
ore amazing because it had been riven
nt from Republican headquarters that
!lnclnnatlana were cold towards Mr.
Bryan."
Regarding the Chicago meetings of j
the two nominees. I can testify that i
there waa marked 'difference and that'
apparently the Tart managers were
afraid to risk a demonstration by the
laboring men If tliev threw open the
meeting to the public; they carefully
Issued tickets and saw to whom they
went men already committed to his
candidacy.
I cite these things, not to indulge in
petty quibbling over small matters. But
they are regarded as essential hertt The
Chicago papers carried onlv curaorv ref
erences to Bryan's greeting In Cincin
nati. I have wondered from reading the
newspapers of many sections whether
the same minimizing of the Brvan go-;
ings ana comings has not marked the
news reports an the coast.
Quite naturally. It is a point of interest
did the Haskell episode hurt Mr. Brv
an? These demonstrations In Cincin
nati and they- were repeated In Toledo,
Detroit. Columbus and many other clt
les were coincident with the exclte
msnt over the Haskell matter, while the
whole affair waa pending and before

have had time to note the effect.
and without hesitation affirm that while
some harm was done, It was Immensely
less than seemed for a time would be
caused; and that the duplicity In con
nection with the Koraker affair did the
Taft cause infinitely more harm.
Restating It briefly: After tha- fight
n Ohio and Taft's winning of the dele
gation, Foraker ceased the battle, sent
his compliments to Mr. Taft, the KepuD-
lcan managers arranged for t oraner 10
appear In public at Toledo, before tne
Grand Army meeting, they shook hands
n the presence or the people, aeciarea
they were friends, and Foraker was
scheduled to speak at 20 or more lm-
ortant Tart meetings. men came
learst's letter reading, and only then
did the president not Mr. Taft discover
a letter alleged w have been written
months before, in which It is claimed
Taft refused to compromise with For
aker. I hope I will be permitted to say in
this column of The Journal that this
Incident contains what theologians call
"Internal evidences" of being a polit
ical ulav. The whole nation knew Taft
and Foraker had made up, and that before
Hearst revealed the smell of Oil directly
applied by. Archbold, all of the Taft
managers wdre willing that thoir candi
date and Senator Foraker should work
together.
It will be remembered that at the
Toledo meeting Senator Dick of Ohio
ended the love feast bv saying that all
that was necessary was to elect Foraker

again to the senate to make the affair
perfect.
Absolutely no disclaimer came from
the Taft people; the whole event was
hailed aa a harbinger of peace in Ohio,
and therefore of success for, "the tick
et.'' Drove XiMt Mall.
I believe that it Is the opinion of the
eastern press that the president drove
the last nail In the coffin In' which was
burled Mr. Taft's hopes of appearing
before the people as an independent,
self-governed man, and raised aloft a
notice that he personally rules the
whole Republican party, and will do
what he will.
No word of protest has come from Mr.
Taft; no Intimation thnt he would like
to demonstrate his ability to tell his
views, and none will deny that he could
tell them if he would, even though It
be without grace of oratory or pleasant
embellishment.
The effect carefully considered and
gauged by reuding and talking with
men on both sides. Is that either Mr.
Taft is regarded as using the president's
cloak of popularity under which to en
ter the White House, or he is actually
unable to define his policies, and is as
some of his opponents claim, merely the
president's creature.
Had Judge Taft really Indorsed the
president's action. It seems likely h
would In some manner have Indicated It
This he has not done.
It Is noticeable that If Mr, Bryan has
leading Issues to present he does not
ask some friend to offer them; he goes
to the people, in his own right and with
his own personal expression, takln
what hurt or help results therefrom
This I am sure the most of peopl
think Is his strength, and the opposite
is i am equally sure Mr. ran s wean
ness.
