ago, and Captain Nakagama had not
forgotten the acquaintances made here
then. Most of the officers are some

QUARANTINE RAISED.
San Francisco Steamers No Longer
Subject to Regular Detention.
San Francisco, Cal., Sept 29. San
Francisco merchants are rejoicing be
cause the government has raised the
Quarantine on all vessels going from
this port. Word was sent out from
Washington yesterday that vessels from
San Francisco need not be Inspected
unless sickness Is discovered.
Action to the above effect was taken
at the recommendation of Dr. Blue,
who has been In charge here since the
plague scare of last spring. Dr. Blue
stated that It had been so long since
a case of the disease had been reported
that he thought It wise to take off the
quarantine.

Quarters for Winter.
Having discharged her cargo of
canned salmon, the American ship Ber
lin yesterday was towed from Alblna
dock to Goble, where she will be tied up
for the winter and left in charge of a
watchman.
The Berlin was one of the first Brls
tol bar salmon cannery ships to re
turn this season, having been beaten to
the Columbia river only by the Ameri
can bark Henry Vlllard, which Is now
-discharging her salmon eargo at As
.r tor la. The St, Nicholas came In a' few

and the Henry Vlllard will also tie up
for the winter at some convenient spot

oteamer to come from Newcastle this
reason In ballast to carry wheat for
' Europe, the first being the Magdala,
'.which is now loading here.
The Magdala brought enough coal
with her to steam her from this port
to Coronet, the South' American coaling
station, and will save some on her full
bill going home. It le probable that
the Bouklr. too, will bring a supply of
fuel for ber own ose on the homeward
bound voyage.

and as fine a specimen of a sailor as

lete and expert swimmer, he says he
could have saved his shipmate had the
latter-cried for help before the moment
he went down. '
"I met Nelson in -Valparaiso," said
Hanson this morning, "and wo concluded
to shin on the Wranalav bound for
Portland. Wo were not satisfied with
the ship, and so decided to swim shore.
At .10 o'clock last night we put our
clothes in a tub, tied life lines to our
wslsts and lumned overboard. Intending

"It was dark, but the water was not
very cold, and we made good headway

and the west shore, when Nelson told
me his foot had gotten caught In the
line lowing the tub. I dove oown. ana
after considerable difficulty freed his
foot and released tue rope from bis
waist tellinc him to swim for shore, as
I could easily tow the tub myself.
"He swam about five yards and then
cried out that he was cone. Ho disap
peared the next moment. I swam
about for some 10 minutes or more, but
he did not come up again, and finally
struck out for shore, where a man liv
ing1 on a scow assisted me out of the
water. Then we reported to the police.
"Nelson was ared about 15 years, and
a nstlve of Halmstad, Sweden."
Chaplain Bernaya of the Seamen's in
stitute notified the caDtaln of the
Wynnstay thla morning that he will ar
range for the funeral in case Nelson's
body is reoovered. He will also bold
services this afternoon on board the
ship.
The Wynnstay arrived here day before
'esterdav after a very stormy, voyage
rom Valparaiso under charter to carry
wheat to Euope.

navigation off the Ash street dock and
steamboat men will probably apply to
the government engineers to have it
