In the opening game Portland scored first In the st-cond Innlnp when McCredle tarted the canto with a P"- '" algnul for the hit ami run play McCredle was hulf way down to a-cond when Ryan singled to right, the ball coming up agalnat the fence with noise like plaiol ahot It waa too faM, however, and Melcholr recovered It In time to hold McCredle at third while Ryan eta yed at firm. Whaling hit to Zelder and with an easy couble play In eight Mohler dropped elder's perfect throw, McCredle ecorlng on the play. Tha next run came In the fourth when, after two were out. Ryan got hit in .ha ahina with one of Griffin a speeder. Then Bert Whaling urtea beauty Into left field. Mohler drew a pasa and McArdlo went out on s. fly to Cooney. Griffin struck out but Madden dropped the third strike and Williams waa almost nome wneu . Madden recovered and beat him to tha Plate. It waa one, , two, three for the KmIh after that Frambes, the newcatchsr, went Into the second game ana maae gooa ;.irom tha start. He had two bad throws, but . when you consider that he has been traveling for the pust week and only reached Portland yesterday morning, he should hot be judged too harshly. He has a beautiful peg and receives well, although he was no! used to Garrett's peculiar style of pitching. -. This second game was a beauty and for seven Innings the. two teams failed to score a run. Both pitchers were doing beautifully and the hits were few .and far between, fceveral men .got to first base but four double plays broke things up effectively. It was a hard game for Garrett to lose, for he pitched well. Mohler scored the first run for the Seals in the eighth inning, when he lined a hot one to Ote Johnson, which the latter partially blocked. But Ote could not catch the little manager 'at first, and ie went to third when Frambes threw wildly, trying to catch - him stealing. He scored on Berry's single- to left field. ... Htldebrand scored the next one on Cooney's error, Berger's sacrifice and Melcholr's single to -center, which Raft?ry booted Jong enough to let Hildy score. . . In the American league Detroit. Chicago. St. Louis and Cleveland are so close that either one may carry off the rag. Chicago has one less game to play than St. Louis or Detroit. Chicago's Games at Boms. There are only fourteen left for Chicarn. A clance at the schedule will show that twelve of these are home fames,, nine are with second division earns and five with first division teams. Detroit runs up against three straight games at Chicago near the close of the season, which may . decide tne Place or uuicaao ana Detroit, it is undoubtedly more advantageous for a team to play on its own grounds, so that Detroit will have to go up against a stiff proposition to win out. St. Louis, which Is making such a run for the pennant this year, has thirteen home games and two at Detroit. Five are with first division teams and ten with second division teams.
