(Staff Correspondent of United Press.) Cumberland, Md., Sept. lJ.j-Con-vlnced that he has made Inroads Into the strength of Judge Taft In Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia and Mary land. William J. Bryan left here tonight for Deer Parlr where he will spend Sun day and confer with the party leaders of West Virginia and Maryland. Bryan made two speeches here today and In each of them he charged Taft with re fusing to play fair with the voters and with attempting to amend the Chicago platform. . The Pernocratic candidate tonight elaborated his denial of tha allegation Mot Congressman Hearst, that he had imnnrtiined the latter to support him for the presidency this fall, he (Bryan) in return promising to support Hearst In I91Z. Mr. aryan saia: J'The statement of Mr. Hearst is abso lutely false In every particular. I met him at his house and also at the house of Dr. John W. Cox some time last fall or winter, but at neither place nor any where else was there any conversation that could by any possibility be dis torted into auch a proposition." - Mr. Bryan held half a dozen recep tions and found time to conrer witn tne party leaders of this section of Mary land. He was Informed that the only point of danger (a in Baltimore. It, "but the fact Is that the man at Oyster Bay has the delegates, and you will see that If there is danger of Hughes being beaten the big stick will wheel the recalcitrants into line." That Hughes' name will be the only one to go before the convention, as has been freely stated, is most unlikely, Be coming to a aeciarauon tonigni Dy Speaker James Wadsworth. "I shall go before the convention," he said, "If I have not a vote outside of my own county of Livingston." That Wadsworth wtll not lack other support than that of his home county was shown upon the arrival of the Washington county delegation this evening. Under the leadership of I. V. Baker Jr. It Is announced they were for Wadsworth. On the whole, the situation here among the delegates Is a puzzle. Hughes partisans are strongly for him and the opposition is fighting the gov ernor with a bitterness that Is almost personal rancor. OPEN SUNDAYS AND EVENINGS The first week of the Invasion of tne east has been encouraging to the Demo cratic candidate. Hia speech tonight was the thirty-first since Jie left Lin coln a week ago and In that time he has traversed Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana. West Virginia and part af Maryland. Beginning at Baltimore and Annapolis on Monday he will go on into New Jersey. New York and New Eng land and then Into Ohio. Sure of Kiddle Vest. Tonight Bryan Is certain in his pwn mind that the electoral vote of Kansas, KhrnUn. Town. Illinois and Indiana and , West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware has been won over to him. He will now fight for New York, Ohio, Minnesota and Wisconsin and he entertains a faith for Michigan. The suggestion that state issues be Ignored in Ohio, as made by the Re publican editors there, pleased Bryan as he regards it as a confession that the state situation Is unsatisfactory. The suDDOrt or laoor leaaers hko Gnmners and other heads of the Federa tlon of Labor pleases and encourages the Nebraska candidate and every report o far received by the national commit tee and transmitted to Bryan is batter than the one that precedes it. Both of Bryan's meetings here were enthusiastic. The attendance was large and there was the usual enthusiasm, especially when Bryan assailed what he termed "Mi. Taft's evasive policy." Thaeature of the night speech here was ardefense of the labor plank of the Democratic platform. Bryan declared that Judge Taft had seen fit to uphold the law whiclt1 permits the summary punishment of labor leaders In con tempt proceedings and this, he declared, was not only un.lust but robbed the de fendants of needed rights. The propo sition tnat a prosecuting orriciai couia liave legislative. Judicial and peremptory punishing power, he riddled as leaning toward tyranny ana aeciarea so rar as he waa concernea ne couio see no reason why the Democratic platform along this line should not meet the approval of all fair-minded men. Bryan will tomorrow deliver his lec ture on the "Prince of Peace" In tha ohurch at Deer Park. He will reach Baltimore at 7:30 o'clock Monday morning. Judge Taft spent a very busv Saturday at his head quarters In the Sinton hotel and re ceived a large number of visitors, but none or special note except Oscar Straus, secretary of commerce and la bor, and the "assistant secretary, Ter rence V. Powderly. They had a long conference with the nominee, and dis cussed the situation In Its general as pects. After they had departed from the conference room. Secretarv Straus said he would take an active part In the campaign and expected to deliver several speeches. He will speak at New York. Chicago and other places to be de termined later. Powderly, former leader of the Knights of Labor, veered away from the discussion of politics with newspa per men, stating that ha had come west ' in tne interest or departmental work. JHa expressed tne opinion that the ma jority of union labor men would vote In accordance with their regular party af filiations. , Powderly is Interested in a plan to turn a atream of Immigration into the middle west and the south, believing that In this manner an urgent demand for farm labor In those sections can be met. wniie nere ne announced that Cin cinnati will be made the gateway of such distribution.
