In 177 Prince HalL then 17 yeara of age. wended hla way to the quarters of General Gape on Copp'a Hill to become a Maaon. In British lodge No. 68 he was raised to the degree of maater maaon the flrat man of African descent to be initiated Into tha order in the American colonies. On March Prince HaU and 14 other negToej were authorised to work under dispensation until, they were) authorised by charter. Prince Hall waa not content with the limited powers contained In the dispen sation from tha army lodge. Ha peti tioned General Joseph Warren for a 5" Charter. Hla request was entertained, but before action couldbe taken Warren foil at Bunker Hill. Hall then applied to the provincial grand master of mod : ern Masons of Massachusetts for a charter. This petition waa rejected on account of his color. Prince Hall and his followers decided to make application to foreigners for that which nad been refused them at borne. On March t, 1784, ha asked the grand lodgre of England ror a warrant of constitution. The warrant was granted September 29. 1784. In 1787 Captain James 8cott. who married tha sister of the celebrated John Hancock, was requested by Prince Hall to bring the warrant fdr African lodge back with him. In April of the same year Captain Scott delivered the . Warrant in person to Prince HalL The lodge of negroes celebrated with great porop and ceremony the arrival of Its warrant from England on Decem ber 27, 1787. The organisation of the first lodge was followed by, tha forma tion of two other- lodges of negro Masons. In 1808 tha three lodges Joined In forming "African grand lodge." of Boston subsequently styled the Prince Hall grand lodge of Massachusetts. . Is the heavft-st loaer.
