pared with some 12,000. acrea a year ago.
In all It ia now figured that about 7,500
acrea were entirely plowed up thla year
and 4.500 acrea not cultivated. Of the
remaining ku.ooo acrea It la estimated
that IS. 000 acres received ordinary cul
tivation and that about 7,000 acrea re
ceived merely a scratch of the plow her
and there. -

yarda of Oregon will average about four
and a half balea to the acre, some not

others will run Ave balea or better. In
normal years the preaent acreage would
call for a crop of approximately 100,000

funeral of Charles Chrlstlp, the young
man who was shot for a deer by Fred
Uttlefleld, took place in this city yes
terday. Christie died Sunday morning
at the hospital here. It was believed

valley, was arrested yesterday and
brought to this city by Sheriff Russell
for shooting at a party of young people
who passed her place 'late Saturday
night The young people were out driv
ing, and coming to the Embler farm
took note of the clusters of fine grapes
which hung front a vine Just over the
fenoe.
One of the party, Miss Hattla Wil
liams of thla city, crawled over tha
fence and attempted to pick some of the
fruit Mra Embler came out from tho
house and fired upon the trespassers
without warning. Miss Williams was
badly peppered with birdshot, ajid other
msnioers pi tne party were also Injured.
Mrs. Embler . was not placed In Jail,
but is kept at the home of Sheriff
Russell, and will remain there till given
a preliminary hearing.

San Francisco, Sept. 8. According to
statements made by the relatives of
Rea James Johnson, who committed sui
cide tn a spectacular manner Saturday
night, the young man ended his life
because his father. Dr. J. H. Johnson, I
a Los Angeles physician .refused to aid
him. Mrs. Lou Sutcllffe. an aunt of
the dead man. Identified the body. She
states that Johnson had given his father
a sum of money to Invest and that the
father refused to return the money when

According to letters written by John
son before endlns: his life, this sum
amounted to $600. The wife of. the dead
man Is in destitute circumstances at
Kelso, a email town near Kern Cltv.
Letters from her were found on his
body. One of them follows:
"1 wish you would come home, for I
am ao afraid something will happen to
you. fjon't do wnat you intended to
do In Los Angeles, arid donl think of It
any more. It would ruin your whole
lire. Donrt worry about baby and. my
