The second fault whlchsthe consumer find a with local "cants" is that they are not of uniform sice: some Deing not larger than two falr sited peaches, while others are. as Marge as average heads of cabbage. Sept S The now era In the livestock market has bean well started ami thn trial has proven most satlsfactorr to commis sion merchants and Hhlppcrs alike. Tha change In operations will not be very I great until the new yards on the penin sula are occupied and then Portland will have the most up-to-date livestock fa cilities in tha country. Just now it Is planned that the stock- yards will be safely located in the new piaca cy Aiarcn 1 and by that time everything will be smoothly operated. By July 1, 1909. It Is expected that all will be In readiness to operate the new Swift plant on the peninsula and Port land will take care of larger shipments of livestock than even the more san guine at this time expect. Portland has several " weeks' trial of the new system of selling livestock and while the commission merchants have not become wealthy, they are Quite satisfied with the regular changes and the shipper knows that he is getting a square deaL The fact that the repre sentative sales are now published by The Journal gives to the shipper of livestock a thorough Insleht into the week's business and ha can sea at a glance what's what In the market and Must now the demand stands In each ar ticie. Tha course of the local wheat mar ket during the past week was quite interesting, showing as it did the full control the farmers have over the mar ket There were few dealers who supposed that the market would go back to the high figures of several weeks ago, but that's exactly what has happened. At this time local wheat values are within a fraction of - the extreme high mark during tne spirited right or early August and present indications are that still higher values will be obtained. The present market is entirely a farm er's affair and the producer fa almost setting his own price on the grain he raises this season. While it looks at first glance as If he has been a per sistent seller of wheat, the reverse Is the case. While the movement of wheat today Is one of the heaviest for this fierlod of tha season for many years, a aras per cent of this wheat was pur chased before the harvest on contract even before the grain was threshed. Exporters are very liberal buyers of wheat at this time and their purchases at tha moment are only limited to the extent that the producer will let eo. While there- Is practically nothing doing In .a milling way for flour, tha millers are purchasing everything they can ptok up at present values. There are some millers and exporters opposed to tha board of trade, because of Its dealings In future delivery, but there Is scarcely one that does not do that very thing himself. Tha heavy purchases on contracts previous to the harvest show this. ,. Practically every miller sells flour several months ahead of time of delivery, up In reality he Is not only buying futures, but selling tnem -neagmg. in other woras. The cash oats market shows a sharp advance ror the week, following tne stiff, upward movement of the previous six days. Toward the close of tha week producers were somewnat irecr sellers of oats around $29 and $30 a ton basis of track delivery Portland. The heav iest movement has been from eastern Orearnn and Washington. Willamette val ley growers seemingly being unwilling to let go under X32 and Hi a ton. The joke of the barley market seems to oe on tne buyers tnis time, ior never were they so unprepared to hold off tha market as at this time. Avail able supplies are so small that they are forced to buy at whatever prices producers are willing to let go at these nigh prices. Just tha same. The hay market Is somewhat easier because of tha heavy orrermgs oy pro ducers a week ago. Now that buyers are trying to pull down values, there Is less Inclination to let go. On the Portland board of trade there was a very firm tone In all grain fu tures during tha past week. For tha week September wheat (club) shows a net rise of lao a bushel, while the December delivery Is lc higher than Monday, September oats (No. 1 white) shows a net gain of 2Uc per cental. and December 3 He. In the barley mar ket on the board there was a net ad vance of 2c per cental In September (No. 1 feed), and a similar rise on the December option. Board of trade prices: 625 square deal. Ha gets all the market af- j fords, less tha usual commission for ' selling." Demand Strong for Best Unas. Killers and backers are demanding a better class of livestock and It will pav I .t.t.mmTf snippers to attend to tnese wants ror the premiums select stock bring over tne orainary orrermgs is mucn mora than sufficient to bring out this class or stock. The demand tor a better class of stock is not confined to any one line but probably the most complaint comes regarding the quality of late arrivals of cattle. Select steers ara very scarce and it Is very seldom that anything comes that is worth $4 to the buyer. While this IS the top quotation printed at this time. It Is qulta likely that a slight advance would be obtained If the quality could be found. During the past week the cattle market ruled very firm, with receipts somewhat mora lib eral than during the preceding six days. While the better class of stock was firmer tha call for ordinary grades was sufficiently heavy to force up values a rraction over tno rulings or a weeit ago. Good Hogs Bring tha Top Tig-ores, seven-cent hogs are rather scarce these days but the market Is showing a good demand for them. Even the stockers ondi feeders are doing better ano prices are siigntiy Detter as win be noted by the representative sales printed below, deflnlta period. A - level - of prices has been reached where holders of securities whose judgment of values Is based upon Intrinsic merlta and not by Wall street gossip, may well them selves what mora they safely hava a right to expect . ' ' Whatever force there la in easy money as a prop to the market In its present stage lies wholly on the speculativa side. Tha large speculativa Interests . who commonly hold stocks In grant quantity ara able to borrow all they, need to carry tha stocks on extremely ' moderate terms. . There Is no fear of tha credit supply running short as It haa In past a-u-, tumns, when the crop moving haa de tained the market's resources, because -this year's cropa will ba financed by RinnA formerly acaulred In mercantile and manufacturing enterprlaes.
