this city Is rebuilding the- Albina ferry
W. 8. Mason at Its yard in Bouth Port
land. The craft will be practically as
. good" at new when placed In commission

Considerable complaint Is being in
dulged in by the population of lower
- Albina because a small boat haa not
been placed on the run across tha river
while the ferry Is being repaired. For
nearly- three weeks people have bad to
patronise the bridges or the lower ferry
because of the other ferry being on the
way . ; , . '

vide, a launch for the accommodation
.of foot passengers if nothing better
could be dona, Not knowing the ferry

The Norwegian bark Daghild arrived
In the harbor this afternoon in com
pany, with the schooner Annie E. Smale,
both in ballast. The schooner went to
the mills of the North Pact no Lumber
company to load lumber for Halkong
and the Daghild was anchored in the
stream until arrangements., have been
made for the loading, of" the 'vessel. "The
Daghild carries water ballast. She was
formerly the German bark Alcyone, hav
ing been built in England for the Ger
mans, who sold her three years ago to
Norwegian owners In Chrlstianla.
The schooner Annie E. Smale Is an
old-timer, having sailed the seas for
years. She is said to be In need of re
pairs to her rigging and It might be
done while the vessel Is here loading.
On her way out from Newcastle, Aus
tralia, to Honolulu, the Smale lost a
sailor nnmed Atfdrew Hanson from the
boom. He couln not swim and was
lost before boat could be lowered over
the side. Hanson' was about 21 years
of age and a native of Norway. A
waterspout was passed in the same vi
cinity. The captain rushed - out with
his rifle and put a ball through it, bring
ing the Immense column ,bf whirling
water down with a crash. : '

The Seamen's Institute sloop Guid
ing Star hns been recovered, and brought
to Astoria. It was found adrift down
the river by boatmen and towed to a
place of safety, A. I Bernays, son of
Chaplain A. E. Bernays will bring" the
famous craft bark to Portland. v
The Guiding Star was abandoned in
the vicinity of Frankfort on the lower
Columbia several days ago bv Harry
Harding, a young apprentice from the
British ship Crown of India, who was
taking it to the Astoria regatta where

An unknown passenger . fell over
board from the Q. R. A N. steamer
Hassalo at 10 o'clock last night when
she was passing the .Union oil tanks
near St. Johns on her way to Astoria.
It is supposed that, he was drowned
since men who put out In a boat could
find no trsce of him.
The Hassalo stopped and played the
, search light' on the water for a long
time and waa joined In the search by
- the steamers Charles R. Spencer, Ball-
ey 'Gatsert and the State of California,
the four boats, playing' their search
lights on the river for some time.

board the Italian cruiser Puglla. Com
mander Citsanl-VlsHintl. is at anchor in
Portland's harbor a short distance above
the steel bridge. Pilot Harry Emken
anchored her there at 6 o'clock last
night after a smart mn yp the river.
The visiting warship Is paintea a
somber grar and does not make much
of a striking picture In the distance.
