Coopev and l'caelee of the Gordon rails company, the visitors Inspected the sites of the proposed new woolen mill., trourlng plant and power house. A trip was made up throuKh the canyon of the falls which the company proposes for power generating purposes. The for mal opening of t he manufacturing town was celebrated by raising a flag, Col onel Hoberat A. Miller of Oregon City making the principal address. At the conclusion of the ceremony and speech niaklng. refreshments were tcorved. The party. cViiibIkUiik of prominent business ami professional men. some of whom were accompanied by their wives, start ed on the return trip at 6 o'clock, arriv ing Id Portland at 7:30. After the matinee and before the evening performance of the Orpheum theatre yesterday, the artists who have entertained the public the last week and maintained the reputation of the Or pheum circuit, were entertained at din ner by J W. Consldlne at the Orenon lintel. The occasion marked the end of the orierilne week of the new circuit in Portland. The resident manager. C. N. Sutton; James II. Erlckson. Frank Cof tinnerry, press representative, and George L. Baker, chairman of the Port land Theatrical Managers' association, greeted the members of tho profession who had taken part in the first week's i roeram. The dinner was elaborate, be- ulnninir at 5 o'clock, and during the cof fee nnd dears several pretty little speeches weie made. B council however, have made to go to Astoria and it is that there will be a great rep resentation of Portland officials at the annual water event. Admiral George S. Shepherd endeav- ored to have the city officials charter a I steamer for the trip and maae tneir visit an official one nut It Is untiKeiy that this will occur because most of the officials wish to make the trip as In formal as possible, which would be pre cluded If Slfepherd's plan were adopted. cago to attend a committee meeting of freight men ut the transcontinental lines. Harry Leeds of Payette, Ida, has accepted tho call from the Mlzpah Presbyterian church and will assume his duties here September 6. Mr. Leeds comes with excellent recommendations. Ir. Jerome II. McGlade, tho former pas-: tor, is traveling abroad for a year with I his wife and child. I When the liquor meets .this afternoon havn an omiort unl t v tlon In the Conrad case, which haa haunted the committee like a grim spec tin for many months. Papers were filed Ith the eltv auditor today In which X. A. Itouthliller transfers all rights to the lease and license lor the poara of trade suloon to C. 1). Elder and John W. Conrad filed papers selling all fix tures Iti the building to Elder. On the face of It these papers Would Indicate tilit Conrad had retained an Interest In the Hoard of Trade saloon, although he denies It, and that the pa pers were simply filed to assure the councllnien that tho sales and transfers were honaflde and that neither Conrad or Houlhllier were Involved in the new saloon. Accompanying the papers was a letter from Guv Lombard, president of the board of trade In which ho said that he had made a full Investigation of the matter unit that Elder will be the sole proprietor of the place and further that Elder Is a man of good character. Conrad maintains that he had no In tereat In the Hoard of Trade saloon other than to sell his fixtures to Ilou thllller and that he would have nothing to do wlili the saloon had the transfer been mad" to ltouthllller. The latter has been endeavoring for weeks to have the council transfer the license to him but his action today Indicates that he has given un the fight and will aeek to enifMKe In luislness elsewhere. It Is evt.ectc.l In view of the condl tlons that the committee will grant the transfer to Elder and end the contro versv which has disrupted the council for months.
