Within tln next in days the harvest Of early fiiKKle hops will hfpin In aome sections of the Mute. Advices received from the valley this niorntn atate that the fiiKKh-H are Just ahout ready to ph k In some wctlun although at mom of thn points the harvest will not become Keneral until about Septem ber 10. There Is considerable controversy amonR hop growers regarding the price that nhouhl he i,i !,i for Katherlnjr the crop this season but thus far none have expressed a willingness, to pay over 40c per box or SOo per loo pounds. Some prowers Insist that under present mar ket conditions and future prospects thev cannot afford to pay over 30c a box hut they express doubt us to their ability to secure pickers at that price. "The pickers have been spoiled by the verv n'Kli prices In effect the past few years anil ll will be hard work to et them to harvest the hops under former flsrures," says a prominent grower. "I4pt yenr as hlRh as $1.10 per 100 pound was paid for picking- and even nt that price harvesters were hard to set." No Bniineaa In Hop Market. Thepo is an entire absence of business In the h ip market :)t the moment Lo cal d'-alers. shv thev have no orders to buy and most of them have contracted rather heavily earlier In the season. There are still some shorts, however. ulv these are still trying to Induce the growers to pick everything. The loriKS say that this would be the ruination of 'he Industry and especially the longs themselves. In any event the trade is divide,! as regards picking and non picking but secretly all agree that it yuld be better by far for not a single bale of hops to tie gathered the present season. Creamery Batter Is Advanced. As recently predicted In this report. titire was an advance of llic a pound In the price of city manufactured creamery huter this morning, but thus far the outside makers are generally Sidling at the old flpure, although all V'1' likely revise their quo tat Inns to morrow morning. Today's price Is on advance of l'fco a pound over former figures. On this same day a year ago there was an advate e of 2Vc a pound. Which put the price of the best city make to 37 ',4c. This price w as the highest ever reached by the local make tor regular brands and the value con tinued until September 3 when It was reduced to 35c because of the great In flux of eastern supplies. A further de cline of carried the price on No vember 1 to 32 So, from which there as a gradual advance until on Deeem-;s-r 13 the market again touched the rec ord at 37 He a pound, in 190i; on this 'jate the price for best local butter was ?tic and on the same date in 1905 the market was S0 a pound. Wh.le today's Advance In creamery butter prices was fullv Justified by lo- cal conditions, 1 lie rise was not put forth without much discussion among he o'tv makers. The fact thnt a car of cistern creamery Is now In the cliv nc.I is being offered the local trade at 2Tic a poind and that the best California product is only "jlji' In the south x wlilch mei-.ns -T'f f. o. h. 1'ortland caused Home apprehension among the local people lout the outside product Been re a foothold here.
