AT THE THEATRES Orpheum Parked From Pit to Dome. The opening of the Orpheum theatre last evening demonstrated to the theatre going public of Portland the class of performance to be seen booked by the Orpheum people. The rounds of ap plause that greeted the performers was most gratifying. Advanced vaudeville, as shown last night. Is the result of the Orpheum sys tem of booking in Europe as well as in this country. The burnt cork comedians Clifford and Burke were about ex hausted answering the repeated calls of the audience. Orpheum Vaudeville. With a truly grand effort on the part of the lone pianist, an lmiassloned and statistical discourse on tho part of tho manager-president, Ueorge L. .Baker, and an outpouring of smartly garbed people the Orpheum circuit was made welcome to our city hist evening. The circuit waa made welcome, Manager Sutton waa made welcome, each indi vidual artist was made welcome; In fact, everybody waa made welcome but the musicians' union. It was a typical Orpheum show which means that It was real vaudevflle and not a con glomeration of boiea. and It waa a real Orpheum audience, with the house pacrfd to thrt doors, everybody happy und as Interested us a circus crowd. There is a something shout r vaude ville sIioh tlut smacks of the circus a constant change and newness und "blEarreness" that partakes of the na ture of a spectacle, and that pleases in the same way, that tickles the same nerves. If Its your Idea of heaven to have a circus ever' week, then tho Orpheum Is your Elysium. The only difference Is that in the Orpheum your seat is comfortable. An that It's ap pealing, no one will deny. It was so appealing last night that we chortled in glee over everything that was done, Wi large crowd that assembled In th Air- dome. Two of the prettiest songs of the evening were sung by Msrgusrlts La Fonts. The first was "In Caatllta" and In the second act "Glow-Worm." The lighting effect and work of the chorus In both songs wars classy, but Miss La Ponte's voles was Just right. Llttl Winifred Green Is about the cutest thing ever aeon. Hr "Auto moblllng" and "Yankee Doodle Cam to Town" gave her a chance to further Ingratiate heraelf Into tha heart of tha Oaka' patrons and sha was warmly re ceived. Allen Curds as Busy Issy could show many a soda water clerk fins points in tha mixing of tha drug storp nevers tel. Other song hits of the evening were: "I'm Afraid to Come Home In the Dark." Herbert Lindley; "Character Hong." Dave Caston; "I Know a Olr! Like You, Albert Leonard, winurw (Sreen and Mayme Prager: "Since Arrah Wanna Married Barney Carney," Mar guerite La Ponte; "Wangdoodle." We took the coy young thing to out hearts twice, we giggled over It and chuckled at Its capers mid trundled It on our knees and laughed at It till the tears ran down our cheeks. We made It a child again. Just for that night. Bv way of prologue Ringmaster George L. Baker, In a costume of brown cloth, cut sheaf, appeared in a song and dance entitled "Ain't It Awful. Mabel!'' It. In this case being the musicians union. After the little prelude to the effect that he was president of the managers' association, etc., etc., Mr. Raker told of the woes of the managers. He dealt inostlv In fleures and fleures are not our strong suit, but this much Is certain, the managers have decided to do without the orchestras until th? first of the year, anyway, and maybe forever. It all depends on the degree of reasonableness exhibited by tl.e union, according to the manager-president, and the change was not made out of deference to the wishes of music- lovers, as some had foolishly supposed. Following Mr. Baker the pianist struck up Von Suppe's "Jolly Robbers ' , he must have been a surreptitious: member of the union himself and the show was on. i Fred Bond waa the headllner. and , Fred Bond is an extraordinarily funny j farcour-as witness his success in re-. But Mr. Bond and his company were so good and the spirit of welcome so permeated the atmosphere I that few things nave causen more laughs with a Portland audience than did he and his. Fremont Benton as Rosie St. Regis was fairly good and the others of Mr. Bond's company were satisfactory. The next Installment of mother-in-law came with Wilbur Mack and Nella Walker In "The Bachelor and the Maid." You wouldn't understand "The Bachelor and the Maid" If I described it to you. But mother-in-law figures prominently as an absent treatment. She is not there in the flesh, but she Is in the spirit. It is a Newlywedh act and is entertaining.
