The vessels that left here early in the spring for the canneries were the bark -Henry Vlllard. the ship ft. Nicho las and Berlin. These are all of the old school of American sailing vessels, reputed to be fair sailers even In their old age. The Berlin and St. Nicholas have been In the cannery fleet many seasons but this is the first year of the Henry Villard. The Vlllard was sent .Nnrtn insteaq of the bark Emily Heed which went on the bench near Tillamook lust spring when on the way from Newcastle to this port with a cargo of coal. Miss ing his bearings the captain kept the vessel on her course till she got into the breakers when there was no possible chance of getting her Into deeper water again. Besides the salmon pack, the ships will bring the crews that worked at fishing and in the canneries during the summer so that ecii versei win reiurn with about 20(1 men on board. The government dredge that has been under construction at Greenwich deck for some time will he ready In a few days. Her first work will probably be to dot pen tho channel into the harbor of Coos Bay. The dredge- Is not self-propelling and will have to be towed to Coos nay. The residents of the bay have subscribed a fund to get the dredge started. It being earnestly desired to have the hay cleared out to accommodate larcer vessels than thosa now plying out of there. No decision lias yet been arrived at hv the government engineers as to what disposition will be made of the dredge when ready for Its first commission. ALONG THE WATERFROYT. VALUABLE CARGOES START. The Arabia got away at 7 o'clock from Montgomery dock No. 1, bound for Hontkoni and way ports with 44S.409 feet of lumber, valued at about J4.5O0, J2.743 barrels of flour, valued at I1J0. 972. and enough m!xd cargo, consist ing of apples and other products to bring the totsi value or the cargo to J146, 787.41. She brought a good list of passengers and a full freight. Captain Nopander reports a strong" head wind. The North Pacific Steamship com pany's steamer George W. Elder Is due to arrive here today from tsan 1'edro and way ports. She bad not reported at Astoria by noon today and It Is sup posed that strong northerly winds are delaying her. Advices from nurban.
